After Anderson Silva credited Steven Seagal with teaching him the front kick, Mr. Seagal has been absolutely milking it for all it’s worth. Seagal will tell anyone willing to listen, the whole entire back story of the front kick and how he learned it 40, 35 or 30 years ago (he just can’t seem to make up his mind on when he actually learned it himself) and spent a whole chunk of time “perfecting” it. It’s pretty funny actually, and if you watch Ariel Helwani’s interview with Seagal, he seriously looks like he’s about to front kick those chef’s creeping up on him (bad memories from “ Under Siege ” I suppose).

Sweet Jesus, the progenitors of death metal, Deicide, are gearing up to unleash hell on Earth with a new album, To Hell With God (Century Media Records), on February 15th. On February 4th, the third and final sneak-peek track — “How Can You Call Yourself A God?” — was made available for public consumption, and all we can say is that it’s a blasphemous ripper.
Deicide – How Can You Call Yourself A God?
If this track, along with the two others that were released early (“Into The Darkness You Go” and “Hang In Agony Until You’re Dead”), is any indication, To Hell With God is going to reclaim Satan’s throne for Deicide, not to mention death metal supremacy. Sure, they’re in their 40s, but Glen Benton still delivers growling vocals from the bowels of hell, Steve Asheim provides pulse-pounding rhythm, and Jack Owen and Ralph Santolla shred with lyrical and bone-crushing precision. For me, the solos and the intricate drumming are the fish hooks, but the chorus is addictive and I found myself chanting it long after my first five listens. The great thing about this new track from Deicide is the fact that it remains death metal while simultaneously appealing to my thrash preferences.
Deicide – Into The Darkness You Go
Deicide – Hang In Agony Until You’re Dead
Deicide is also touring to support To Hell With God on their God Is Dead – To Hell With God tour, which also features Belpheor, Neuraxis, Blackguard and Pathology. The tour kicks off on February 15th, the same day the album drops. Check the schedule below and don’t miss your chance to see these death metal giants at work:
Rock Hard!
Rupert Wyatt, the director of The Escapist is in post production with the newest Ape film. Written by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, Rise of the Apes seems to be a remake or re-imagining of the ’72 film Conquest of the Planet of the Apes or a prequel to it.
We haven’t seen any of Pierre Boulle’s prodigy since Tim Burton took a shot at a remake of Planet of the Apes back in 2001, which met with mediocre success and perhaps the studios waited a decade to release another one because of its poor performance. This time around, we will not have actors in ape suits, but rather voices for CGI rendered characters (done by Weta Digital, the company that did the effects for Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and King Kong, and James Cameron’s Avatar).
The story follows an ape named Caesar (Andy Serkis) who gains intelligence and human-like self-awareness after genetic experiments to cure Alzheimer’s changes his genetic makeup. Apes evolve and war breaks out between the apes and humans for domination of the planet.
Whether this film meets with better success than Tim Burton’s or not doesn’t really matter to us at Yell! Magazine, we’ll go watch it anyway to see Freida Pinto; if you remember Slumdog Millionaire, she played Latika. Pinto is a former model turned actress who lights up the screen with her presence. Watching Woody Allen’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, a film we would usually avoid, was worth it just to drool along with Josh Brolin.
Look for her in two other upcoming films: Black Gold (May 2011) and Immortals (November 2011). Rise of the Apes will be released November 23, 2011.
Brian De Palma
4 out of 5 stars
Although Brian De Palma’s Scarface is considered his best film by most critics, we’d like to throw our hat in for this more erotically tinged bastardization of Hitchcock’s classic Rear Window. Starring Politically Incorrect host Craig Wasson as a struggling actor set up to be a witness to a murder by a clever killer doubling as a Native American, Body Double makes for easy return viewing. We also see Melanie Griffith in her first major role; she magnificently plays an adult film star. The Frankie Goes to Hollywood song “Relax” is featured in a scene of debauchery in the form of a music video that satisfies every ’80s MTV watcher who wanted to see what would’ve happened if the music stations weren’t restricted in their content.
Alexandre Aja
3 out of 5 stars
Horror with a twist, High Tension, a film by French director Alexandre Aja, is Halloween meets Fight Club. Not at all original, although the opening scene when you see the killer receiving fellatio from a severed head was a first in my movie-going experience, High Tension even falls apart on reflection. How is it that the killer was both outside the farm and up in the guest bedroom? This sort of incongruity was blatant and makes the ending of the film foolish. But since gore is a slasher film’s main draw, and High Tension had it in abundance, it succeeds at least at that level.
Greg Mclean
2 out of 5 stars
Take a Crocodile Dundee character and make him a serial killer and you will have the premise for Wolf Creek. It sounds interesting, but the development of the story takes so long you fall asleep before any of the gore begins. Then the director seems to forget about some characters while he decides to concentrate on only one victim at a time, leaving you wondering what happened to the others. It seemed Greg McLean wanted to keep his direction simple, but it doesn’t work.
James Gunn
2.5 out of 5 stars
A pointless black comedy horror film starring Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks, Slither rips off other films of the genre an, therefore, doesn’t really bring anything new to the screen. It will be a fun film for those who haven’t seen anything by George Romero and the ilk, but for those who have it can become a tedious watch. Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series is much more fun than this.
Iain Softley
3.5 out of 5 stars
One of the better supernatural thrillers that has come out of Hollywood in the last 10 years, The Skeleton Key stars Kate Hudson as a caregiver who finances a degree in nursing by helping out a stroke victim in rural Louisiana. When it turns out the man (John Hurt) is actually being poisoned by his wife, Hudson tries to save the man only to become more involved with the intrigue. This explanation only scratches the surface to what becomes a case in Voodoo and the Occult. To not ruin the movie by delving into the details, suffice it to say that the ending was both refreshing and creepy.

Zuffa, LLC, doing business as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) wishes to extend its great appreciation to the United States Department of Justice, U.S. Immigration, and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) and Homeland Security Investigations (“HSI”) for the direct and forceful action they have taken in combating the criminal piracy of UFC Pay-Per-View events.
In connection with the recent forfeiture raids initiated by the United States Department of Justice, the UFC wishes to individually thank Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and John T. Morton, the Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) for aggressively confronting and pursuing these criminal enterprises.
Speaking on behalf of the UFC, Dana White, Zuffa’s President, issued the following statement:
The very forceful actions taken by Mr. Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York and Mr. Morton, the Director of ICE, against these parasitic websites is very welcome news. The criminal theft of Pay-Per-View events has resulted in the loss of millions of dollars of revenue to not only the UFC and its fighters, but has also deprived federal, state and local government of their rightful entitlement to significant tax revenue.
On behalf of the UFC and its fighters, I extend my sincerest thanks to Mr. Bharara, Mr. Morton, and the many Assistant United States Attorneys and Agents of Homeland Security Investigations who worked so tirelessly during the course of this intensive investigation.
