Bad Religion Release A New Single And Weigh In On The Forthcoming Album

Los Angeles punk icons Bad Religion released the title single from their upcoming new album True North today. “True North” utilizes a wall of bristling guitars and charging punk rock beats to explore issues of alienation and loss informed by vocalist and co-songwriter Greg Graffin’s recent life experiences. The new album arrives January 22nd via Epitaph Records.

Gaffin explains that

“The song is written from the perspective of a kid who is running away. He says ‘I’m out of here, I’m off to find true north.’ It’s about recognizing that you don’t fit in and trying to find a truth and purpose. Those are all classic punk themes. We still remember exactly what it feels like to be a disaffected kid in this world. And I think we were able to convey that particularly well on this album.”

Produced by the band and Joe Barresi, True North celebrates the power of cogent punk in the face of personal pain and adversity. On the new album, the storied band deliberately revisits and refines the powerful and melodic Southern California sound they helped define.

On the sound, Brett Gurewitz states,

“We went back to our original mission statement of short concise bursts of melody and message. The intent was to record stripped-down punk songs without sacrificing any conceptual density.”

Universal Gives Riddick A Release Date

Yeah, we kind of forgot about this franchise too, that is until news broke today that Universal has confirmed Riddick‘s released date (September 6, 2013). Production got underway just about a year ago in Montreal, Canada, which hardly makes sense since the third installment (following Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick)takes place on a sun-scorched planet. Yup, Riddick was left for dead, encounters an alien race, sets off an emergency beacon, and then must face some mercenaries. Sounds like a typical day for Riddick.

The title role has been reprized once again by Vin Diesel, and this time around he’ll be joined by Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica), Dave Bautista, Nolan Gerard Funk, Bokeem Woodbine, and Jordi Molla. The film is directed by David Twohy, and it has reportedly garnered itself an R rating, which you’ll be able to see in IMAX glory.

If you happen to be a fan of horror director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Haute Tension) and actor Elijah Wood (Sin City), then get ready for a four-minute treat that features them in a behind-the-scenes video clip to Franck Khalfoun’s remake of MANIAC. The featurette is packed with great interviews including a good look at how the crew handled some of the elaborate POV shots used in the film. Fans of the original MANIAC will be happy to see William Lustig, who gave Aja the approval and support to do the remake, also make a short appearance in the clip.

IFC Midnight purchased the North American distribution rights for MANIAC back in August, which means a VOD release is planned very soon, followed by a limited theatrical run. As soon as we hear about those details they will be updated on Yell! Magazine, but in the meantime make sure you check out the video above for MANIAC.

The Walking Dead, Coming At You In Full Black & White

That’s right, folks. Just as the pilot episode appeared as a bonus feature in The Walking Dead‘s Season 1 special edition Blu-ray, AMC is going to air Season 1 and at least 6 episodes of Season 2 in black and white. How awesome is that? Yes, gore in full HD color is something to behold, but there’s a certain atmosphere that can only be created in black and white.

It would have been nice if AMC thought of doing this as a filler for the mid-season gap, but no, this black and white fest will get underway on February 14, 4 days after The Walking Dead Season 3 picks up again. AMC, you suck.

The hugely anticipated trek gets underway February 22nd at Ventura, California’s Majestic Ventura Theater Half House and then continues through early April. Capcom Announced PC Release Date For Resident Evil 6

Here is a date to remember that I wasn’t expecting to be revealed anytime soon, as Capcom officially announced today the release date for Resident Evil 6 on the PC. While the console versions have been out since October, and some additional content is already available for download. It appears that all of them including future content will be launched with the PC version on March 22, 2013. Computer junkies should be pleased with this announcement because not too long Capcom said that RE6 wouldn’t come available anytime soon for the PC, as they promised not to make the same mistakes as RE4.

Additionally to this news, Resident Evil 6 has a new title update for the PS3 and Xbox 360 today, which unlocks Ada Wong’s campaign with co-op partner support. The update also adds No Hope difficulty to the game, and new camera-adjustment options to play around with. Capcom also confirmed another RE6 update is coming on January 22, 2013 that will turn on the Agent Hunt mode from the start.

The last piece of reminder not to forget is that three new multiplayer modes (Predator, Onslaught, and Survivor) for Resident Evil 6 is being released tomorrow on the Xbox 360 for a bundled price of $9, or for $4 individually via Xbox LIVE.

Sony unveils Female Character in “The Last Of Us”

Sony’s prolific in-house developer, Naughty Dog, first announced last December their next video game franchise titled The Last Of Us, which has been confirmed for release on May 7, 2013 exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Today, we have new details about a female character in The Last Of Us named Tess, who has been described as a “pivotal character” in the game, and she will be the partner to Joel (main protagonist).

According to Gamespot, Tess lives in one of the last remaining quarantine zones of a city, who works in the black market under martial law, and also helps Joel to secure the contraband.

“Tess and Joel subscribe to the same dog-eat-dog philosophy,” Sony said on the official PlayStation blog. “They survive by being willing to do what others can’t or won’t. Her trust in and loyalty towards Joel runs deep. However, secretly, she questions whether Joel shares the same emotions that she feels for him.”

Lastly, Tess is voiced by actress Annie Wersching, who is known for playing the role of Renee Walker in 24. Wersching has also provided motion capture for the character.
