]]>It is bad for the sport, bad for the organization, we’re supposed to be role models. You’re supposed to stay above that sort of thing. – Alexander Gustafsson on Jon Jones’ drug test results
Sweden’s Alexandre Gustafsson was originally scheduled for a rematch in September with UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones, but because of a torn meniscus, Daniel Cormier ended up replacing Gustafsson for that bout. Instead, Gustafsson will now square off with Anthony Johnson on January 24, 2015, at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, a venue that holds 30,000 seats. It’s reported that this will be the second-biggest event in UFC history, the biggest being UFC 129: St-Pierre vs. Shields held in 2011.
UFC on FOX 14: Gustafsson vs. Johnson will air live on FOX at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The full fight card is listed below.

Soon after the judge dismissed Anthony Johnson’s (18-4) domestic abuse case last week for past allegations, the UFC was quick to welcome “Rumble” back into the light heavyweight division. On Wednesday, UFC President Dana White announced that Johnson is now tapped to face No.1 contender Alexander Gustafsson (16-2) in Sweden on January 24, 2015, for the main event at UFC on FOX 14.
Both fighters sound thrilled about the five-rounder that will take place in the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, which holds 30,000 seats. Johnson said he isn’t intimidated to fight in Gustafsson’s hometown:
This fight might be on his home turf, but I’m ready to go over to Sweden and prove that I’m the next in the line for the UFC light heavyweight title, I’m not intimidated by fighting in front of Alex’ hometown fans. I’m going to go in there and look for the knockout like I do in all of my fights. I can’t wait for this!
Gustafsson is just thinking about UFC gold, and less of Johnson:
This is going to be an epic event, I want more than 30,000 fans to come and witness me win on January 24th. Then I’m going to go and get the title! My journey back to the top starts now.
The event will be broadcasted LIVE on FOX Sports 1 (Sportsnet 360 in Canada).
]]>Daniel Cormier
No. 1 light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson has suffered a knee injury that has forced him to withdraw from his UFC 178 bout with Champion Jon Jones. As a result, No. 2 contender Daniel Cormier will challenge Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title on Saturday, September 27th, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Undefeated at 15-0 in his pro career, Cormier owns UFC victories over the likes of Frank Mir, Roy Nelson, Patrick Cummins, and Dan Henderson. A two-time U.S. Olympian and former standout wrestler at Oklahoma State University, Cormier has long been considered a potential threat to Jones’ reign as 205-pound champion.
He and Jones have traded words in the press for months regarding a potential fight and their feud only intensified once Cormier moved to the light heavyweight division at the start of 2014. This heated rivalry will now finally be settled inside the Octagon on September 27th, in what could be one of the biggest events of the year.

]]>Just to clear up a couple things, people think we’re in contract negotiations with Jon Jones – we’re not. Jon Jones still has five fights left on his contract. So what we’re doing right now is trying to get him to sign the bout agreement for Gustafsson. He doesn’t want to fight Gustafsson… Lorenzo and I have a meeting with Jones on Thursday to get him to sign the bout agreement, and he’s asking to fight Cormier instead.
]]>No chance, let me rephrase that. I’m not saying he [Alexander Gustafsson] doesn’t have a chance. I’m just saying that if I had to bet my money, or if I asked 10 people who wins this fight, nine out of those 10 people would say Jon Jones, because honestly, I believe that he’s better because he has more tools. – Daniel Cormier
Since UFC 165, Number 2 UFC light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson has been eyeing an instant rematch after his loss to Jon Jones, but since Glover Teixeira took the Number 1 spot after defeating Ryan Bader for a title shot, the Swedish mixed martial artist has taken the fight to Jones verbally.
Gustafsson has made it clear over and over again in interviews that he strongly believes that the champion is trying avoid him at all cost because he’s a “really bad matchup” for Jones. Gustafsson also believes that Jones wants Teixeira because it’s “very good” for him style wise. Jones hasn’t been too keen about those remarks and feels Gustafsson is “delusional” and that he should go back to the drawing board before a rematch.
I think it’s fair to say that Jones has lost some respect for Gustafsson, according to what he recently said:
I respected him a lot more before we fought. I’ll tell you what, he has so much arrogance for someone who didn’t win.
I find it funny, because Gustafsson lost the fight fair and square. I will admit he won Round 1 and Round 3, but that’s it. I won the fight. I’ve never heard someone chirp so much who lost. I could see if I poked him in the eye and the fight had to be stopped or I caught him with a big punch while he was winning and it was a fluke or something. But it was nothing like that.
Jones meets Teixeira at UFC 172 on April 26, 2014, at the Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, Maryland. UFC President Dana White confirmed the winner of the bout will 100% square off with Gustafsson next, who sealed his title shot after he defeated Jimi Manuwa in Round 2 at UFC Fight Night 37.
