14 Of The Best TV Shows Of 2014 /best-tv-shows-2014/94154/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=best-tv-shows-2014 /best-tv-shows-2014/94154/#respond Tue, 30 Dec 2014 13:24:19 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=94154 best tv shows of 2014

Television has been so great in recent years that it’s a wonder that people still actually go to the theaters to watch movies. I’m being facetious, of course, but 2014 has been another fantastic year for the small screen, which is why we feel that it’s about time that we do our first ever list of the best TV shows of the year.

Even though we limited our selections to genres that interest us and our faithful Yellers (i.e., horror, fantasy, and crime), it’s still a tough crowd to choose from. Naturally, there have been some misses in 2014 (From Dusk Till Dawn, Sleepy Hollow, and Person of Interest, I’m lookin’ at you), but the hits, man the hits just kept rolling.

As great as these series appear to the eye in terms of the cast and their skills as actors, we’d be remiss if we neglected to give a nod of appreciation to the source material (if there is any), to the directors, to the writers, to the special effects teams, to the set directors, and, well, to everyone else involved. No, we’re not accepting an award… but you should award yourself the opportunity to give these shows a try.

No.14 Bates Motel

How is a show that I cover on a weekly basis at the bottom of this list? As interesting as Bates Motel is, it plods along at a very leisurely pace. And while the show is still coming into its own, finding focus on Norman rather than his sensational mother, it still has growing pains, but there’s huge potential, which its already begun to fill.

Synopsis:
Bates Motel is a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film Psycho, and gives a portrayal of how Norman Bates’ (Freddie Highmore) psyche unravels through his teenage years. Fans discover the dark, twisted backstory of Norman Bates and how deeply intricate his relationship with his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), truly is.

No.13 Constantine

To be honest and fair, I’ve only seen a couple Constantine episodes, but it looked very promising and I really liked what I saw, causing me to dog ear this one for later viewing. Call me what you will, but I actually liked the Keanu Reeves movie of the same name, based on the same graphic novels.

Synopsis:
A man struggling with his faith is haunted by the sins of his past but is suddenly thrust into the role of defending humanity from the gathering forces of darkness.

No.12 Penny Dreadful

This one is as fun to watch as it is visually arresting. An all-star cast leads this show as it weaves the tales of our favorite monster legends into a single web of intrigue and horror.

Synopsis:
Explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, and others unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London.

No.11 Vikings

Synopsis:
The adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok: the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the saga of Ragnar’s band of Viking brothers and his family as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. As well as being a fearless warrior, Ragnar embodies the Norse traditions of devotion to the gods: legend has it that he was a direct descendant of Odin, the god of war and warriors.

No.10 American Horror Story

Honestly, this show is on this list more for second half of Season 3 than for the current Freak Show. Nonetheless, the series has an amazing concept: a different story each season with different characters played by the same actors, more or less.

Synopsis:
An anthology series that centers on different characters and locations, including a haunted house, an insane asylum, a witch coven, and a freak show.

No.9 Hannibal

Hannibal struggles with audiences and very nearly didn’t get picked up for a third season. It’s a dark, twisted, cerebral show, which might have something to do with its limited audience. The show can also be horrifyingly graphic in its depictions of violence and gore.

Synopsis:
Explores the early relationship between the renowned psychiatrist and his patient, a young FBI criminal profiler, who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers.

No.8 True Detective

Another crime drama that, at times, is as disturbing as Hannibal, but with a distinctively different palette. What’s more is the amazing performances turned in by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

Synopsis:
The lives of two detectives, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, become entangled during a 17-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana.

American Horror Story Renewed For Another Season On FX /american-horror-story-renewed-season-fx/90789/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=american-horror-story-renewed-season-fx /american-horror-story-renewed-season-fx/90789/#respond Mon, 13 Oct 2014 18:21:19 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=90789 american horror story - freakshow

Are you enjoying the latest season of American Horror Story? We hope you are because you should know that Freak Show has broken all ratings records for FX with its premiere episode last Wednesday night. In light of that, FX is moving forward with a 13-episode order for the fifth and next installment of the show, which will begin rolling out on the network in October next year.

The debut of Freak Show hit huge numbers! It delivered 10 million Total Viewers, 6.54 million Adults 18-49, and 4.08 million Adults 18-34, surpassing FX’s previous record holder with American Horror Story: Coven. FX Networks and FX Productions CEO John Landgraf sounds extremely thrilled about the new season and expects the next incarnation of AHS to further the legacy of the show’s producer, Ryan Murphy.

Landgraf said,

The American Horror Story anthology has had the highest growth trajectory of any show in FX history, not to mention an unprecedented track record of success in awards recognition, with Ryan Murphy and his partners, Brad Falchuk, Dante Di Loreto and Tim Minear at the helm, the show’s success is not surprising. AHS continues to deliver amazing stories, a brilliant troupe of actors led by Jessica Lange, and a visual style unlike any other on TV. With Nip/Tuck, Glee, The Normal Heart, and American Horror Story, Ryan Murphy has established himself as one of the most successful and prolific producers of this generation. We expect AHS: Freak Show and the next incarnation of AHS to further his legacy.

American Horror Story: Freak Show continues with episode 2 titled “Massacres and Matinees” this Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m.

Make sure you don’t miss it!

Fans of the Ryan Murphy-created series, American Horror Story, will soon have another series to look forward to from the man. FX has already green lit the pitch and the concept, giving American Crime Story a bypass of the typical “pilot episode” protocol.

American Crime Story will be a true-crime show taking inspiration from a high-profile criminal case and running with it for an entire season. The series’ premiere season will have 10 episodes and focus on the O.J. Simpson trial. The first two episodes of American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson will be written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the writing team behind films like Ed Wood, The People Vs. Larry Flynt, and the Andy Kaufman biopic, Man on the Moon.

We’ll keep you posted as news of American Crime Story comes to light. For now, consider some high-profile criminal cases you think would make for a good season and let us know what they are in the comments section below.

Personally, I hope that the new series isn’t a bad omen for American Horror Story.

Last week we gave you some casting news and plot details about the upcoming season of American Horror Story, subtitled Freak Show. This week we’re letting you in on a bit of news that was revealed at the recent PaleyFest in Los Angeles.

As reported at Collider, Michael Chiklis (The Shield, The Commish, Fantastic Four) will be joining the cast as Evan Peters’ father and Kathy Bates’ ex-husband. Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts, Frances Conroy, Denis O’Hare, Gabourey Sidibe, and Jamie Brewer are also returning to the show.

Speaking on a PaleyFest panel, the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, noted that a freak show in 1950s Florida was a setting that Jessica Lange wanted. Nice that they made that happen for her in what will be her final season on the show. Also, despite the setting being in Florida, the show will be shot in New Orleans.

American Horror Story: Freak Show – Season 4 Casting News & Details /american-horror-story-freak-show-season-4-casting-details/80957/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=american-horror-story-freak-show-season-4-casting-details /american-horror-story-freak-show-season-4-casting-details/80957/#respond Tue, 25 Mar 2014 12:02:33 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=80957 american horror story freak show

The first details have been released about the upcoming Season 4 of American Horror Story. Co-creator Ryan Murphy announced via Twitter that the new season will be titled American Horror Story: Freak Show, which means a carnival setting of sorts. If you’ve seen the 1932 Tod Browning classic, Freaks, then you know this season could be a shocking ride.

Entertainment Weekly have unearthed some additional details about the new season:

Set in Jupiter, Florida, in 1950, Freak Show finds Jessica Lange playing a German ex-pat who is managing one of the last freak shows in the U.S. Her group of “unusuals”? Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, and Frances Conroy all play performers whom Lange’s character has rescued; Denis O’Hare and Emma Roberts are also in talks to return. Freak Show’s 13 episodes will track this group as they do anything to keep their business around.

Last year Jessica Lange announced that her last appearance on American Horror Story would be in Season 4. Does this mean that her character will die at some point during the season? Guess we’ll all have to watch to find out.

American Horror Story: Freak Show gets underway in October 2014, on FX.

We’ll be sure to keep you Yellers posted as new details emerge.
