Graffiti Artist and innovator/icon RISK has announced the grand opening of the Buckshot Art Gallery in Santa Monica, California. The art gallery will feature a balanced blend of both urban and fine art, and is set to have its first exhibition on October 17th, 2015. The exhibition is titled Noche de Calaveras and will be curated by RISK. Attendees can expect to see works from some of the most renowned artists and photographers in the world. The mixed media pieces will consist of painted skulls and photographic concepts as seen through the eyes of the artists.

Kelly Graval, the multi-talented fine artist, illustrator, and graffiti artist known as RISK, has been synonymous with the Los Angeles art community for decades. With a career spanning 30 years, RISK has solidified his place in the history books as a world-renowned graffiti legend. He has come a long way since he pioneered the painting of freeway overpasses, signs, and billboards, dubbed “heavens.” Although RISK loves aerosol art, he sees it as merely just one genre in his life’s work. From his days as a student at the USC School of Fine Arts to gallery and museum showings around the world, RISK has transformed from a street artist to a respected icon in the contemporary art world.

RISK recently released a 350-page retrospective book, Old Habits Die Hard. The book was put together with the help of prolific writer and curator Roger Gastman, who worked with RISK to recount a career spanning over four decades and details his history, failures, successes, and, of course, the many brushes with the law.

Buckshot Gallery Presents Noche de Calaveras Artists:

Risk, Seen, Tristan Eaton, Nathan Ota, Estevan Oriol, Slick, Andrew Hem, David Flores, Everlast, Evidence, O.G. Abel, Phil Frost, Saber, Sonny Boy, Van Styles, Aaron Thomas, Axis Valhalla, Cyrcle, Ernie Cefalu, Franco Vescovi, Kenny Scharf, Lamour Supreme, Meggs, Sharktoof, Steven Lippman, Y Mas

Time: 6-10 p.m.
Date: October 17, 2015
Address: 3129 Pico Blvd. Santa Monica, California 90405
Number: 310.310.8471

Sticky-Note Monsters To Give You Nightmares https://www.yellmagazine.com/sticky-note-monsters-give-nightmares/89118/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/sticky-note-monsters-give-nightmares/89118/#respond Wed, 27 Aug 2014 17:49:40 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=89118 OK, these sticky-note monsters aren’t terrifying enough to actually give us horror hounds any nightmares, but they might give small children the night terrors. Or they might not. Even though Danish artist John Kenn Mortensen (Don Kenn on social media) taps into “the things that go ‘boo’ in the night,” his illustrations carry with them the innocence of some of the most popular children’s books around, notably Where the Wild Things Are and those illustrated by Shel Silverstein.

The remarkable thing about Kenn’s monster illustrations, however, are that they’re all drawn on those tiny sticky notes (you know, the kind you doodle on at work). We’re guessing your doodles never turn out so good.

Check out Kenn’s work in the gallery above. If you like it, buy the hardcover book at Amazon. You can also follow Kenn on Facebook and Tumblr.

I don’t know if this is for men or women, and I really don’t give a reindeer’s frozen crap in hell. The Anatomical Heart Necklace is cool enough to be worn by any sex or creature on this planet.

I would be much happier saying that this necklace was made of silver, but unfortunately it’s just “silver toned.” At least it’s priced to move, even at its regular price. And at its sale price, there’s no reason not to buy a few to give to all your friends.

Head on over to www.inkedshop.com to make your $14.95 purchase.

Hooch! Flask

Hooch! Flask – Credit: Etsy.com

It’s been a long time since I made my own hooch, or moonshine, but next time I do I want to make sure that I have this kick-ass flask to put it in. Scrap that; next time I go out I want to put my favorite elixir in this flask. Then again, it’s so pretty that it might just sit in the liquor cabinet as a novelty piece.

The label reads:

Drinking “Hooch!” may lead to short term relationship problems, and even provoke an ass-whooping or two. Drinking “Hooch!” does NOT give you any special powers. Persons drinking “Hooch!” CANNOT fly or read peoples minds. Gambling while drinking “Hooch!” is not recommended. Does not cure baldness, remove love handles, cellulite, or correct bad wardrobe decisions. The makers of “Hooch!” are not responsible for any dumb-ass decisions, or actions you might take after drinking this product. Always drink responsibly.”

Are you metal? Rock? Are you an aspiring rockabilly, horrorbilly, or just plain punk guitarist? Whatever your interest or musical preference, there’s no denying that Chicks on Picks have some seriously inspiring products (mostly picks).

[See image gallery at www.yellmagazine.com]

Chicks on Picks formed in 2006, featuring the artwork of Dave Nestler, and has since exploded to include artists and photographers such as Mark Wasyl, Julian Murray, Kristen Leanne, and Steve Prue. The company has also expanded beyond just guitar picks and now carries guitar straps, jewelry, and clothing (the last two seem to be intentions at this point). Each product line also falls into one or more of the following categories: Chicks on Picks, Tattoo Chicks, Drop Dead Sexy, or XXX Picks.

Having never touched any of Chicks on Picks’ products, I can’t attest to the quality of the product. They look great though, and if they’re not for actual use, they could add some inspiring detail to your work area, dashboard, coffee table, or wherever else you decide to locate them. If you think you can do better than Chicks on Picks, there is a forthcoming option to customize your own product.

We live in interesting times, an era in which we combine and admire the unlikely pairing of traditional pin-up beauty with traditional outlaw or military symbols of masculinity. Tattoos and sexy pin-up women have become relatively commonplace, and we here at Yell! Magazine are grateful for the shift in perspective. There’s often a horror element involved with the neo pin-ups and their accompanying ink, which is something else we can appreciate.

Marilyn Monroe Zombie Doll by Carissa RoseIs there a better way to celebrate the combination of the old with the new, the beauty with the horror, the class with the outlaw, than with a 17” x 11” Marilyn Monroe Zombie Doll print? The original artwork was done by Carissa Rose and the prints are hand signed. Protecting your cool Marilyn Monroe Zombie Doll print is 80 lb semi-gloss cover. Don’t neglect to check out the details; the stitched boob is a great touch.

These are only available at InkedMag.com, however, the price has dropped from $29.95 to $19.95.

Michael Godard can be considered one of America’s most prolific and popular painters. His pieces sell for tens of thousands of dollars and he has become America’s best-selling painter as of the writing of this article. Some may not know the name, but most will recognize the art work. Olives, martini glasses, and dice are major components of his paintings and once you see a selection you will not soon forget what you saw.

His paintings reflect the worlds of gambling, drinking, sports, and an overall display of the “good life.” The paintings are crisp and dramatic, cartoonish, and fun. But underlying many of his paintings is an element of the sinister. Michael Godard presents vices as virtues, shining a positive light on a hedonistic and ultimately empty lifestyle, and sells it back to those that participate in it. It’s not surprising that Godard sells to rock stars and celebrities and that his book Don’t Drink and Draw is forwarded by one of the most hedonistic personas in the rock world, Ozzy Osbourne.

Michael Godard is the perfect reflection of the state of modern culture and society in the West today. Part brilliant artist, part marketing genius, Godard has his thumb on what it takes to become successful and famous. He paints what sells. He has won arts awards, been featured in an award-winning documentary, and has appeared on various television shows all while understanding that in a media-saturated world you must create a buzz about you. You need to get known not only for your art, but also for yourself (or the image you create for yourself). Godard looks like what he represents in his paintings. He is a sexy, tattooed dark-haired man who would look as comfortable on a Harley or behind the mic of a hard rock band as he is in front of the canvass.

Michael Godard picture

Michael Godard

His paintings are an ABC of marketing. Godard’s olive is the same as Nike’s swoosh or McDonalds’ golden arches. Whether it is a painter’s obsession with an item, a popular behaviour in many artists, or a savy marketing ploy, Godard’s olive is a reflection of the artist as businessman that permeates modern culture. Music, film, books, and paintings are commodities to be consumed. Godard’s paintings are not left on the canvass: posters, watches, coasters, plates, calendars, and other items are subject to Godard’s art.

How Michael Godard will be considered hundreds of years from now is anyone’s guess; perhaps he will be forgotten or maybe he will be remembered as what best represents our time in art history. What is hard to argue against is man’s the abilities. All one has to do is look at the symmetry of the items in his work. The red dice and light reflecting off the martini glass in his painting “Sitting on Seven” is the exercise of a man who has a very steady hand and keen eye. Let history judge.
