It’s been awhile since we last talked about this, but the big announcement right now is that Phase 4 Films will release the new Patrick movie on March 14th in select U.S. theaters and on VOD. The film, directed by Mark Hartley, has taken a slightly different title than the 1978 original from director Richard Franklin, now adding the subtitle “Evil Awakens.”

Fangoria got some exclusive pics, which we’ve included here for your benefit.

patrick: evil awakens

Patrick: Evil Awakens stars Sharmi Vinson (You’re Next) as nurse Kathy Jacquard, Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, Aliens 3, Underworld: Awakening) as Doctor Roget, Jackson Gallagher as the titular character, and Rachel Griffiths (Blow, Six Feet Under) as Matron Cassidy.

Patrick: Evil Awakens Synopsis:

The vague description of the film goes as such:

After killing his mother and her lover some years before, Patrick is the comatose patient in room 15 of a remote, private psychiatric clinic.

patrick: evil awakens

Fango offered something much juicier:

Nurse Kathy Jacquard begins work at a remote, Gothic psychiatric hospital and is introduced to Patrick, a comatose patient being experimented on by Head Doctor Roget and his second-in-command, Matron Cassidy. Kathy soon discovers that Patrick has telekinetic abilities, which violently threaten the lives of everyone at the clinic.

Let us know what you think of this remake and if you plan to see it.

However, it seems like some organizations are already getting a head start, and setting the bar high.

One commercial in particular has hit the interwebs and is a perfect fit for us Yellers, since we all know some of you are slackers and have skipped school a few dozen times in your life. I did, and I find this new commercial, by the Learn for Life Foundation of Western Australia, hilarious. Learn for Life’s aim is to promote the importance of education for people of all ages. And fucking aye, it turns out to be a bloody gorefest that makes Tom Savini‘s work look like peanutbutter. Well, not really, but you get the point.

Anywho, hit the play button and check it out!

Wolf Creek 2 Acquired For U.S. Market https://www.yellmagazine.com/wolf-creek-2-acquired-us-market/72359/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/wolf-creek-2-acquired-us-market/72359/#comments Sun, 10 Nov 2013 18:08:17 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=72359 Wolf Creek 2

A few weeks ago, we showed our readers the very first trailer for Wolf Creek 2, an Australian horror film directed by Greg McLean featuring serial-killing pig-shooter Mick Taylor.

Based on what we saw in the trailer, the sequel looks as promising as the first installment, but a lot more fun with bigger action scenes, and probably more kills and blood spills. The budget for the sequel was over $7 million rather than just a flat million like Wolf Creek had. So expect to see a lot more, and I mean a lot more, in this one. Wolf Creek 2 opens in Australian theaters on February 20, 2014, and it’s going to hit the U.S. market in some shape or form too.

Image Entertainment announced that it has officially acquired Wolf Creek 2, Chief Acquisition Officer Bill Bromiley stated the following about their new outback horror film:

We are thrilled to work with Greg Mclean on the follow-up to his superbly made first feature film. Mick Taylor is one of the most sadistic characters I have seen on screen and the sequel does not disappoint – it gets under the skin, we can’t wait to show horror fans!

Still no word yet on when Wolf Creek 2 will hit U.S. theaters or disc release, but we’ll announce it as soon as it becomes available.

Stay tuned for more on Yell! Magazine.

Wolf Creek 2 Trailer – “Crocodile” Dundee Meets The Road Warrior [VIDEO] https://www.yellmagazine.com/wolf-creek-2-trailer-and-poster/70867/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/wolf-creek-2-trailer-and-poster/70867/#comments Tue, 22 Oct 2013 00:18:09 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=70867 Wolf Creek 2 posterOur favorite Crocodile Dundee look alike turned serial killer in the Australian outback is back once again for the ultimate kills. This time he’s got more than just a big knife and rifle to work with; in Wolf Creek 2 he’s piloting a huge truck that looks almost unstoppable, like the tanker used by Mad Max in The Road Warrior.

I find it surprising that both Dundee and a Mad Max truck are present in this film, which makes me wonder if it was an intentional act by producer, writer, and director Greg Mclean. That was my initial reaction to the first trailer for Wolf Creek 2, which seems to have shifted from a “based on true events” experience in the first film to an action-packed horror film. Don’t get me wrong, it still looks great and I can’t wait to see what this film brings to the table next year.

Wolf Creek 2 stars John Jarratt, Ryan Corr, Shannon Ashlyn, and Phillipe Klaus. It opens in Australia on February 20, 2014. There’s no official word yet on when it lands in North America, but we’ll keep you updated on Yell! Magazine.

Wolf Creek 2 synopsis:

Lured by the promise of an Australian holiday, backpackers Rutger, Katarina, and Paul visit the notorious Wolf Creek Crater. Their dream Outback adventure soon becomes a horrific reality when they encounter the site’s most infamous local, the last man any traveler to the region ever wants to meet, Mick Taylor (John Jarratt).

As the backpackers flee, Mick pursues them on an epic white-knuckled rampage across hostile wasteland. Only one will remain to be dragged back to his lair to witness the true magnitude of his monstrosity. And if the last man standing is to have any hope of surviving where no one else has survived before, he’ll have to use every ounce of cunning to outwit the man behind the monster and become every bit as ruthless as the monster inside the man.

Patrick (2013)

The name Jackson Gallagher may not ring a bell in your head at the moment, he’s only got one feature film credited in his career thus far, but you must of heard of the Australian horror pic, Patrick, at one point in your life. Either you already watched the original one by Richard Franklin, or you know very little on the remake. Remember, we reported one of the first pics from the remake not too long ago? If not, no worries because the film is in pre-production, principal photography was wrapped up in December, and a few stills have been released, including poster designs.

Today, director Mark Hartley revealed the first pic of actor Jackson Gallagher in character as Patrick, along with a short note below.

Bankside Films have released the first image of Jackson Gallagher as PATRICK. The photo features a rare instance when he’s not in a coma!

So there you have it, a creepy looking comatose patient who wreaks havoc through his powers of telekinesis. Patrick is currently slated for release on October 17, 2013.

Metal Down Under – The Definitive Aussi Metal Documentary https://www.yellmagazine.com/metal-down-under-documentary/47439/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/metal-down-under-documentary/47439/#comments Sun, 13 Jan 2013 15:36:11 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=47439 We’re all familiar with the likes of AC/DC and Airbourne, and some of us might even know such bands as Rose Tattoo, The Angels, and Damaged, but how much does the majority of us know about the heavy metal scene in Australia?

If you’ve ever wondered about Australian metal, then you’ll be pleased to know that Nick Calpakdjian and David Hawkins are putting together a film that documents the history of metal in Australia. According to the press release, Metal Down Under will discuss the significance and influence of such bands as Psycroptic, Pegazus, Psychonaut, Allegiance, Slaughter Lord, and Blood Duster

An interactive website is also being released in conjunction with Metal Down Under. You can visit www.metaldownunder.com now, and that’s going to have to do for now as the documentary is currently being filmed and an official release date hasn’t been announced yet.

Check out the rest of the Metal Down Under press release below, and as always…

Rock Hard \m/

Animus Industries is producing a feature-length documentary about the history of heavy metal music in Australia. The film will trace the origins of metal in Australia and explore this ever-evolving genre of extreme music. From grindcore, thrash, death metal, black metal, hardcore, doom, melodic metal, sludge, power metal, and the many more sub genres that exist, Metal Down Under will cover it all.

The history of metal in Australia has never been fully told and this film attempts to rectify that. Rather than a backstage interview film with a bit of live footage in between, Metal Down Under will tell the story of Aussie metal through formal interviews, archival, animation, candid observation-style footage and first-person narration. The film will be accompanied by an interactive website that will document the production of the film as well as profile and publicize many of the bands and identities involved in heavy metal. Released in conjunction with the documentary DVD will be a bonus DVD of music videos, interviews, and extended material, as well as a compilation CD.

Love or hate his artwork in horror films, Lucio Fulci is considered by many a legendary Italian filmmaker that spent most of his film career emphasising on grotesk imagery such as body decays, and mutilations. Cinephiles are not unlike archeologists. We live in the past, examining visual artifacts of light and sound from bygone eras. These celluloid documents are unraveled, revealing stories and styles, twists and turns, characters and creations that reflect the ideas, perspectives, and history of moviegoers and movie makers alike.

We are blessed to live in a time when it is possible for almost anyone to become a cinephile. Celluloid artifacts are waiting to be unearthed through DVD labels like Criterion and Kino, channels like Turner Classic Movies and IFC, or on-demand services like Netflix. Classic films and undiscovered rarities are literally available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Important filmmakers as diverse as Akira Kurosawa, Orson Welles, and Brian Trenchard-Smith are but a push of the button away.

Brian Trenchard-Smith

Brian Trenchard-Smith

Prepare to get Trench-ed.

If you’re reaching for your Google task bar for that last name, I am shocked and appalled. You call yourself a film fan? You’ve brought shame upon your family and friends. And to think, you went to college. Way to waste your family’s time and money. No wonder you can’t hold down a job or a girlfriend. Who would want to be with someone who doesn’t know who Brian Trenchard-Smith is? No one, that’s who. NO ONE.

Leprechaun
The sequels are still better.

Maybe I’m being too harsh. Surely you’ve heard of Brian Trenchard-Smith. THE Brian Trenchard-Smith. Director of a little movie called Escape 2000 aka Turkey Shoot? Stunt Rock? Day of the Panther? Leprechaun 3? Leprechaun 4? This is the man who took Warwick Davis to Las Vegas and outer space. For that reason alone, Brian Trenchard-Smith’s name should be tattooed on the back of every man, woman, and child that has ever walked into a multiplex. Preferably in that area women traditionally reserve for stamps of a sexually lascivious nature. You know the kind. With the sexy font?

Diarrhea Tramp Stamp
Oh, yeah, sweetheart. That’s the font I’m talking about.

If you want a crash-course in the early years of B-Trench (as he’s known to his friends), first check out Not Quite Hollywood, a documentary history of the inception and impact of Australian Exploitation, or Ozploitation, films. The film dedicates a solid chunk of running time to galvanize Smith’s early, low-budget action, science fiction and horror films. Even Quentin Tarantino comments on the man’s filmography and impact on exploitation cinema. This stamp of approval should be enough to tear you away from Yell! Magazine and go check out the documentary and some of his films. However, since you seem to be unconvinced (you’re still reading, aren’t you?), let me recommend two B-Trench classics that will have you scrambling to your local Wal-Mart $5 bin for those Leprechaun sequels.

Not Quite Hollywood

This documentary has more bare breasts than a Russ Meyers film.

First, let’s cleanse our palate with a bit of B-movie kids fare called BMX Bandits, before moving to the purer, uncut sex-and-violence stuff with Dead End Drive-In.

BMX Bandits
Yes, this is actually on Blu-ray.

BMX Bandits is one of those “You had to be there” family movies. You know the kind – kids films that were purely the product of their time and place, pop cultural time capsules that appeal specifically to one generation. The Goonies, for example, is pure Amblin entertainment, 1950s Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew kids adventure, pumped full of practical special effects, cartoonish villains, and set pieces that didn’t quite qualify for use in Temple of Doom (though Shortround made the cut, weirdly enough).

Goonies, Data
“Hang on fans of Asian stereotypes. We go for ride.”

BMX Bandits, by proxy, is a byproduct of suburban Australia, BMX popularity, punk/new wave culture but with that Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew junior adventure nostalgia packed in for good measure. The film plays out like a live action Disney movie jacked up on Bertie Beetle candy, Count Cola, and gratuitous BMX stunts. Lots of gratuitous BMX stunts.

BMX Bandits
SWOOSH

The films stars Angelo D’Angelo (possibly the greatest stage name in the history of stage names) and James Lugton as P.J. and Goose, a pair of fun-loving teenage BMX-ers with big dreams of their own track. Through an unfortunate accident, the boys find their beloved bikes totaled by a runaway shopping cart. Fortunately, every cloud has a silver lining – this cart ran away from Nicole Kidman. Yes, THAT Nicole Kidman. A very young Nicole Kidman, playing Judy, a hard-working grocery store clerk whose dream of owning a BMX of her own are dashed when she loses her job because of the incident.

Bmx Bandits, Nicole Kidman
I bet she misses that hair.

Still, P.J. and Goose remain optimistic. Well, maybe not, but I would, especially if I had Nicole Kidman joining my crew. The boys fall head over heels for her in an early textbook case of Kidman’s affect on men. While their mutual pursuit of the gal creates an added layer of romantic tension for the stunt-loving gang, their discovery of a duffel bag full of walkie-talkies belonging to some shotgun toting bank robbers makes things even worse. Soon, they’re hocking the radios for BMX money and are being pursued on bikes by mask-wearing marauders, not to mention local police.

BMX Bandits
Send it back to hell!

A high-flying adventure ensues, one that truly lives up to its name. BMX Bandits stands up as one of the finest extreme sports action films ever made, (bested in my mind only by Point Break, which manages to be both the best and worst extreme sports action film ever made). The stunts are absolutely mental, performed by pro BMX bikers in delightfully wacky, sometimes suspenseful, mostly slow-motion sequences that make you want to drop that lame-ass Schwinn you ride to school and pick up a tiny, shocked out BMX for some ball-busting tricks of your own.

BMX Accident
Emphasis on that ball busting part.

BMX Bandits is hard not to love, despite the fact that it barely qualifies as an exploitation film in the traditional sense. There are no boobs or blood, just ridiculously, joyfully, tear-jerkingly cheesy action. Literally every BMX stunt is accompanied by wonderful punk/new wave music and an incredibly synthy laser noise. It is the audio equivalent of the Nike swoosh, strained through clumsily laid chords of a coked-out keytar player. Quite simply, it is the greatest piece of foley work in the history of film.

Mongoose
Laser noises included.

It is my opinion that BMX Bandits is infinitely superior to the aforementioned Amblin film in every way. That might seem a bit extreme, but what BMX Bandits has that Goonies lacks is a deep message, the kind that resonates as absolute truth long after the end credits have rolled: BMX stunts will always, always triumph over evil. In the face of hardened criminals who steal, threaten kids with knives, and bumble through life in general – prevailing goodness is only a bunny hop or 180 bar spin away. In this crucial time in the world’s economy, I believe that’s a universal message we can all latch onto.

BMX Bandits
If only BMX bikes were around during World War II. We could have saved so many lives…
