Last time we talked about Eyehategod it was to bring you the news that the band had postponed its Australian and Mexican tour dates because of vocalist Mike IX Williams’ mental stability and health. We hope that those issues are truly resolved, as we want nothing but the best for the legendary vocalist.

Whether or not he’s back to top form, Eyehategod will kick off their Staggering Backwards European takeover next week. Set to embark on March 30th, in Finland, the trek will fester its way through nearly two dozen cities throughout Europe, including stops at the Durbuy Rock Festival in Belgium, Desertfest in the UK, and Roadburn in the Netherlands where.

While in the Netherlands, both guitarist Jimmy Bower and vocalist Mike IX Williams will appear on a special Q&A panel April 10th, to discuss Noisey’s NOLA: Life, Death And Heavy Blues From The Bayou documentary. Released last year, the fascinating seven-part series explores the people and culture that helped spawn the Crescent City’s now-legendary hotbed of talent. A full screening of the documentary will follow the Q&A as part of Roadburn Cinema. For further info go here.

In related Eyehategod tour news, the band will return to the West Coast in May to deafen ears on day one of Psycho California in Santa Ana, California, alongside Atriarch, Author & Punisher, Old Man Gloom, Cough, and more. The following month the band will return to France for Hellfest 2015 with additional onstage abrasions being conspired.

Eyehategod Issues Statement About Postponing Australian And Mexican Tour Dates https://www.yellmagazine.com/eyehategod-issues-statement-postponing-australian-mexican-tour-dates/95973/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/eyehategod-issues-statement-postponing-australian-mexican-tour-dates/95973/#respond Tue, 17 Feb 2015 23:01:28 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=95973 eyehategod postpones shows in australia and mexico

Eyehategod, NOLA progenitors, recently canceled their Australian tour, and have just announced the cancellation of their three-day jaunt in Mexico too. As a result, the band has issued the following statement:

We regret to have to cancel both our Australian and Mexican dates until further notice. Vocalist Mike IX Williams’ mental stability and health are major serious issues at this point, and we are very, very sorry for putting our fans and business partners in this miserable position. We feel horrible about these empty spaces in our schedule and will make up these tours as soon as possible. The cancellation of these tours is in no way any fault of the promoters or foreign booking agents. We hope our fans understand.

We think fans will understand and Yell! Magazine wishes Williams a speedy road to wellness.

Since part of the problem included long flights, Eyehategod recently embarked upon two separate short runs of shows on the West and East Coasts, fully against doctor’s orders. These shows were found to be physically draining and a detriment, performance-wise, to Williams. Williams – who is currently dealing with exhaustion and chronic fatigue from a near nonstop tour schedule over the last five years — is resting, healing, and catering to his health and will be ready to conquer Europe and the UK on tour this April.

The album ranked on several year-end lists, including the coveted #1 spot of Spin‘s 20 Best Albums Of 2014 who gushed, “The self-titled slab is as nastily heavy as anything they recorded back in the ’90s, dosed with added perspective, instant-classic black-tar blues riffs, and a heady dose of vocalist Mike IX Williams’ trademark surrealist protest poetry.”

Set to commence in Birmingham on January 6th, Mountain of Wizard will levy their smoky, bottom-heavy jams upon the ears of West Columbia, Richmond, Brooklyn, Hartford, Portland, Poughkeepsie, and Providence with additional shows to be announced in the weeks to come.

Formed in 2008, Mountain of Wizard worships at the altar of the riff boasting a thick, raging, blues-ridden Bayou swagger inherent to their swampy NOLA surroundings. The band independently released a two-song 7″ last year with a full-length slated to surface later this year via Swedish imprint, Skrammel Records. In the meantime, turn up and tune out to the soul-shrouded sounds of “Sorceror’s Deathbed” in the player above.

Eyehategod: Live In Raleigh, NC, 1993 – Yell! Magazine’s Full Concert Series https://www.yellmagazine.com/eyehategod-live-raleigh-nc-1993-yell-magazine-full-concert-series/91968/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/eyehategod-live-raleigh-nc-1993-yell-magazine-full-concert-series/91968/#respond Sat, 08 Nov 2014 16:48:57 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=91968 Imagine for a second what today’s music scene would be like if Eyehategod had catapulted to the top in the early ‘90s instead of Nirvana. Both were fresh, young bands, doing something very different from the mainstream. I make the comparison because Eyehategod was just as alternative at the time as Nirvana was. Also, Nirvana is used as the example because they are the go-to band when discussing the advent of alternative/grunge music in the ‘90s. Although grunge gave us more melodies with the fuzz guitars and pounding rhythm section, the angst-ridden, doom-laden sludge from Eyehategod gave us more noise, more fretboard prowess, and more anger using the same sort of tones.

Formed in 1988 by guitarist Jimmy Bower and late drummer Joey LaCaze, Eyehategod were instrumental in developing the NOLA metal scene, which drew heavily from influences like Melvins, Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, and Black Flag, among others. Other bands representing the NOLA scene, and often having shared band members, include: Exhorder, Corrosion of Conformity, Down, Crowbar, Acid Bath, Soilent Green, Goatwhore, and more.

Eyehategod has had an up-and-down career troubled with internal conflict and drug abuse, resulting in sporadic releases and an extended unofficial hiatus. However, during their time off, several 7” and splits were released. Although the band reconvened in 2000, quickly releasing a couple of comp albums [10 Years of Abuse (and Still Broke), Preaching the “End-Time” Message], members were still busy with obligations to other bands and it took them until 2014 to release a proper LP with new material.

In the player above you’ll find a 1993 Eyehategod performance that took place in Raleigh, North Carolina. The show took place in August, which predates the release of second studio album, Take as Needed for Pain. There are plenty of more recent Eyehategod concerts circulating on the internet, all of them excellent, and although this one is rough in terms of audio and video, it demonstrates a band at the cusp of greatness.

Yell! Magazine’s Concert Series brings you kick-ass live shows to get your party started right and to help you vent your Friday frustrations.

Clearly the title provides you with the information to know what this doc is about, which is the heavy, doom-laden music coming out of New Orleans, Louisiana.

After watching Episode 1 I wasn’t sure where this doc was going, since so much time was spent on Pantera and what influenced them and Phil Anselmo, more specifically. By the end, there wasn’t much left to tell. Now, having watched Episode 2, which focussed on Eyehategod, it’s probably a safe bet to assume that each subsequent episode will focus on an individual NOLA band.

Episode 2 features is largely comprised of interviews with Eyehatgod frontman Mike Williams. In his segments he discusses the creation of a band “that’s like Sabbath, but is a punk band,” Hurricane Katrina and it’s toll, drug addiction, and the loss of drummer Joey LaCaze.

New Orleans’ sludge peddlers have just announced a huge 26-city U.S. headlining tour, with support from Ringworm and Enabler. The trek gets underway in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 28th and concludes on Tampa, Florida, June 22nd. See below for a full list of dates.

The tour commences the day after the May 27th release of Eyehategod’s self-titled album, which was co-financed by Phil Anselmo‘s Housecore Records. Anselmo also produced and recorded the vocals at his Nodferatu’s Lair.

Vice Magazine‘s Noisey has called the album “the record that EHG fans have been waiting for; a stomping and venomous set of eleven tracks that reignite the band’s amazing propensity for down-trodden, electric blues.”

The domestic version of the release will come in a CD digipack, while the LP will be housed in a gatefold jacket. The first pressing will be limited to 1,600 copies and available in black (600 copies), purple (300 copies), clear (400 copies), purple and grey (300 copies). Pre-order packages including various CD, LP, and T-shirt bundles are currently available via Housecore Records.
