If you show up in Fannettsburg, Pennsylvania, for the inaugural Shadow Woods Metal Fest, you’re going to be sorely disappointed… and you might be the only one there. Don’t worry, the event hasn’t been canceled, but it has moved to White Hall, in Harford County, Maryland, which is slightly southeast from its original location.
Location seems to be all that has changed, as it’s still an open-air, camping-based event. There have also been some lineup changes, but that’s relatively minor when you could be showing up to an empty open field somewhere in Pennsylvania. See below for additional details in the press release.
Set to take place September 25th – 27th, 2015, the new location of Shadow Woods Metal Fest is similar to the previous site, with deep woods, cabins, and tent camping fields, yet is slightly closer to both Baltimore and Philadelphia, making it even more accessible to East Coast metallers planning on attending the diverse three-day festival. The more intimate setup of the new camp is equipped with several cabins, modern plumbing bathrooms, a professional kitchen, a lodge building, and access to a river, as well as an indoor stage.
Since initial announcements, Menace Ruine dropped from the lineup and was replaced by Black Table, yet the remainder of the Shadow Woods Metal Fest lineup remains the same, including lead performances from Midnight, Falls of Rauros, Occultation, Velnias, Iron Man, Anagnorisis, The Flight of Sleipnir, and Stone Breath, along with 26 additional acts. The fest is also likely to be the first live performance for the surviving members of Wormreich since their tragic vehicle crash in April. The gathering showcases underground black, doom, death, and noise and experimental metal bands on two alternating stages all day Friday and Saturday. Camping and workshops on topics such as runes, guitar maintenance, yoga, and more will be offered and are included in the ticket price. Artists and record labels will be vending alongside several onsite food stands.
There will be zero ticket sales at the gate for Shadow Woods Metal Fest — advance pre-sales to those 21 years of age and older is the only way into the fest, and is still BYOB. Cabin beds are now included in the ticket price but are limited to first-come first-served. There is a list you can sign up on mentioned in the private group. There are only 350 tickets in total, and half of those tickets have been sold.
Additionally, the Shadow Woods Metal Fest website has been redesigned to include a store — including a new poster for the event designed by Fred Grabosky of Sadgiqacea. As well as the newly launched Shadow Woods Radio, showcasing artists set to perform at the festival. Check it all out right here.

]]>This August 14th and 15th, the inaugural installment of the Metal Insider– and Earsplit PR-sponsored Death to False Metal Festival a brand new metal fest will take over Hamden, Connecticut, at The Outer Space & Ballroom. Born out of a desire to bring together some of the best touring acts in the world with quality local and regional metal acts, the Death to False Metal Festival hopes to create one of the premiere metal festivals in the U.S.
Friday night’s lineup will feature thrash legends Whiplash, Valkyrie (Relapse Records), Imperial Triumphant, Nightbitch, Vengeance, and Bedroom Rehab Corporation. Saturday night will feature USBM stalwarts Krieg (Candlelight Records), Secrets Of The Sky (Metal Blade Records), Immortal Bird, Destroyer Of Light, Godhunter (The Compound Recs/Battleground Records), Secret Cutter, Tomb & Thirst, Grizzlor, and Archaic Decapitator.
Tickets go on sale on May 1st, at the festival’s Facebook page.
Festival curator Chip McCabe commented on the event:
The name Death to False Metal is actually a bit tongue-in-cheek. The metal scene is littered with way too many people who carry an ‘I’m more underground than you’ attitude, which I find amusing, so the title is dedicated to them. However, the name does reflect that we are looking for a certain aesthetic for the bands that play this festival. Our lineup is fairly eclectic, with thrash, death metal, black metal, doom, grindcore, traditional metal, etc. But we will not stand for generic, cookie-cutter garbage; we want the best of the best, every year.
Additional news on the Death to False Metal Festival will be released in the coming weeks. For info or coverage of the event contact [email protected].

]]>The concept of the open-air heavy metal music and camping fest, so popular in Europe, seems to be a rarity in America. The organizers of Shadow Woods Metal Fest hope to change that with their inaugural fest happening September 25th – 27th, 2015, in Fannettsburg, Pennsylvania, in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.
Not too far out of the U.S., you can have the camping/festival experience at Amnesia Rockfest in Montebello, Quebec.
Shadow Woods Metal Fest features lead performances from Midnight, Falls of Rauros, Occultation, Menace Ruine, Velnias, Iron Man, Anagnorisis, The Flight of Sleipnir, and Stone Breath along with 27 additional acts throughout the event. The fest showcases underground black, doom, death, noise, and experimental metal bands on two alternating stages all day Friday and Saturday. Camping and workshops on topics such as runes, guitar maintenance, yoga, and more will be offered and are included in the ticket price. Artists and record labels will be vending alongside several onsite food stands. Shadow Woods Metal Fest is BYOB and age restricted to 21+. To keep the fest intimate, only 350 tickets will be sold, and the fest is already one-third sold out. Tickets are $92 (plus a 99 cent processing fee). A limited number of group cabins will also be available.

“The U.S. has big fests like Coachella that involve camping, but they don’t feature any bands I want to see,” said lead organizer Mary Spiro who runs the Metallomusikum.com blog and who books shows in Baltimore, Maryland. “We also have great metal fests like Maryland Deathfest and Martydoom, but those events happen on parking lots or inside of venues. I wanted to experience the music I loved in a more aesthetically pleasing environment.”
After attending the California camping and music festival Stella Natura, held in the Tahoe National Forest in 2013, Spiro was further inspired to pursue her dream. “Stella Natura was a case study for me and helped me form sort of an overall vision for the event. Also, the way that Under the Black Sun in Germany is set up is inspiring. Initially, all I wanted to do was to get a small group of bands I liked together for a weekend, maybe at a private farm or something. But apparently I don’t know anyone willing to offer up their property for such shenanigans,” she said. “I didn’t want something huge though. I didn’t want it to have thousands of people. I wanted it to be intimate, relaxing, manageable and most of all allow attendees to see all of the bands, if they wanted to.”
It took her more than a year to find a good location to hold Shadow Woods Metal Fest, which turned out to be a camp used primarily for children’s Summer programs. Mountain Lake Summer Camp caters to kids from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but off-season the owners rent the property to groups. The well-maintained private property features cabins, a lodge, electricity, indoor plumbing, a professional kitchen and cafeteria and is located adjacent to a swimmable lake. Attendees can tent camp on the grounds or bid to stay in one of six large cabins that can house up to twelve adults each. Attendees may also drive from home or stay off site in a hotel in one of the neighboring towns.
Spiro assembled a team of enthusiastic promoters and others with expertise in fields such as sound, event security and hospitality to help make Shadow Woods Metal Fest a reality. The fest is co-hosted with Metallomusikum by Lokvlt Productions in Philadelphia, WinterForge Promotions in Pittsburgh, Leftover Pizza Productions in Frederick, Maryland and Slimehole/Strange Matter in Richmond, Virginia. Bands chosen to perform reflect the diversity of the underground music scene in mid-Atlantic region plus a few from across the country and even Canada.
“There are not many outdoor metal festivals on the East Coast that aim to offer a variety of underground metal bands in an intimate setting. Shadow Woods Metal Fest beckons those to come witness what is brilliant and wild about metal in this decade,” said Christopher Woodford of WinterForge Promotions.
Some hope the gathering will offer opportunities to explore one’s spiritual side.
“This music fest is a crucible of underground metal, an affirmation of alternative ways of being, and a congregation of kindred spirits. To me, it is a beacon of hope and health in a dark and confused world,” said Annie C. Humphrey of Lokvlt. Humphrey will present a workshop on runes during the fest.
Leading underground record labels will vend at the fest and have shown support for its mission. “A multi-day festival on the East Coast featuring an eclectic lineup of bands from across the underground metal, folk and experimental spectrum is a rare enough thing, but one that has been as thoughtfully curated as the inaugural Shadow Woods Metal Fest promises to be a particularly unique and exciting event,” said Adam Wright, founder of Crucial Blast Records and a member of the fest’s planning group. “Anyone into the more atmospheric fringes of the extreme music scene should definitely be marking off their calendars for this.”

Cult of Luna’s Johannes Persson said:
2015 is going to be a slow year for Cult of Luna. However as much as we are musicians we are also fans. Evaluating if the offer to play Psycho California was worth dusting off our instruments was not hard after looking on the line-up. Being on the same bill as Pentagram, Sleep, and a festival packed with the best bands around is a privilege in itself and we’ll try to live up to that honor.
The lineup for Psycho California is: Sleep, Pentagram, Cult of Lune, Kylesa, OM, Earth, Russian Circles, Bedemon, Conan, Wrench, Eyehategod, Indian, Earthless, Pallbearer, Stoned Jesus, Old Man Gloom, Cave In, Acid Witch, Truckfighters, Tombs, Bang, Electric Citizen, Coffinworm, SubRosa, Eagle Twin, Mammatus, True Widow, Anciients, Bellwitch, Dead Meadow, Lord Dying, Death By Stereo, Radio Moscow, Ancient Altar, Samsara Blues Experiment, Atriarch, Elder, Mothership, The Well, Deathkings, Wo Fat, Rozamov, Destroyer of Light, Highlands, Bloodmoon, Slow Season, Goatsnake, Crypt Trip, Wrench, Lords of Beacon House, Tumbleweed Dealer, Sinister Haze, Blackout, Red Wizard, Banquet, and Loom.
Festival interludes will be provided by Housecore Records’ artist Author & Punisher and vinyl DJ set from Bob Lugowe (Relapse Records) and Sean Pellet (Last Daze Here).
Previously announced early bird tickets sold out immediately. Tickets for the festival are on-sale as of this morning, with both a 3-day pass ($149.50) and a 3-day VIP pass available ($256.66). Tickets can be purchased at: psychoca.com
