Fortunately, Kino Lorber will release a new 2K restoration of A*P*E to reinvigorate the giant monster movie collection in February.

A newly discovered 36-foot gorilla escapes from a freighter off the coast of Korea. At the same time an American actress is filming a movie in the country. Chaos ensues as the ape kidnaps her and rampages through Seoul.

Directed by Paul Leder and featuring special effects by Park Kwang Nam, the film stars Rod Arrants, Joanna Kerns and Alex Nicol. It was released at approximately the same time as Dino De Laurentiis’ 1976 remake of King Kong.

A*P*E is generally regarded by some critics as a campy Z movie. The film comes alive again on Blu-ray and DVD starting on February 28th, 2017. For an early peek at the Blu-ray/DVD details and cover art, then continue reading below.

An American Werewolf in London Remake In The Work With Max Landis https://www.yellmagazine.com/american-werewolf-london-remake-work-max-landis/113463/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/american-werewolf-london-remake-work-max-landis/113463/#respond Tue, 08 Nov 2016 15:23:09 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=113463 An American Werewolf in London is hands down one of my all-time favorite horror films alongside The Thing and Day of the Dead. I’m sure most you have it listed in your top 10 list too. Obviously, talking about a remake is a bit touchy and most horror hounds already feel disappointed with the news.

If you remember well, a sequel was released in 1997, but it centered completely on a different group of characters in Paris. It sort of felt like a remake since the love story was quite similar to the classic and some scenes felt reshot multiple times. Worst of all, the horror film relied on CGI effects, which was subpar compared to the Oscar-winning makeup effects created by Rick Baker. So let’s just hope to remake will have a great original script and the director will go back to using traditional techniques with latex materials and all the fancy stuff Baker used in An American Werewolf in London.

Speaking of director, it appears like Universal Pictures is trying to tap someone very special, who will also be handling the script writing duties. Max Landis, son of John Landis, is currently negotiating a deal to direct a remake of his father’s An American Werewolf in London. So the news isn’t all that bad after all.

John Landis will executive produce the film, with Todd Garner and Matt Smith also on board as producers. The remake is currently in development.

Pumpkinhead To Get Rebooted By SAW Executive Producer https://www.yellmagazine.com/pumpkinhead-rebooted-executive-producer/110942/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/pumpkinhead-rebooted-executive-producer/110942/#respond Wed, 03 Aug 2016 19:26:02 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=110942 Stan Winston isn’t around to recreate the vengeful Pumpkinhead creature, but a new special effects wizard will definitely continue his legacy in the reboot. That’s right! The Pumpkinhead franchise is heading back into production in the near future for horror hounds.

For those unaware, the 1989 supernatural horror film Pumpkinhead kicked off Winston’s directorial debut, which afterwards spawned three sequels with the latest one being a TV movie titled Pumpkinhead: Blood Feud.

According to EW, the Pumpkinhead franchise will be brought back to life from the grave by Peter Block, executive producer of the SAW franchise, Frozen, and John Carpenter’s The Ward, just to name a small few. It appears like the screenplay has already been penned by Nate Atkins and Block is currently seeking a director to put the reboot together in the same spirit has the original movie.

In the EW report, Block said he wants the same approach.

We think that it’s going to be a nice slow reveal, lots of scares and lots of action in the beginning, and a great creature in the end, which everybody should be able to look at and say, ‘Oh, that’s Pumpkinhead!’ It’s not like you’re all of a sudden going to find that it’s some amorphous, nebulous, CGI wispy thing. You’re going to know it came from the Pumpkinhead family lineage.

Stay tuned to Yell! Magazine for much more Pumpkinhead coverage to come.

Fantasia 2016: Creature Designers: The Frankenstein Complex Review https://www.yellmagazine.com/fantasia-2016-creature-designers-frankenstein-complex-review/110580/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/fantasia-2016-creature-designers-frankenstein-complex-review/110580/#respond Sun, 17 Jul 2016 14:27:43 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=110580 After months of waiting for Canada’s biggest genre film festival to begin, I finally got the chance to see my first film at Fantasia 2016 in Montreal yesterday evening.

Honestly, it was a glorious two-hours of my life because not only did I get to enjoy the Canadian premiere of Creature Designers: The Frankenstein Complex, but I also got to see director Guillermo del Toro get awarded with Fantasia’s Cheval Noir Award. So it was definitely a moment in time I will never forget.

Since del Toro is a massive fan of monsters in general, especially Frankenstein, and also appeared in the documentary, it made perfect sense for Fantasia to present the award after the screening. Del Toro also held a special press conference earlier in the day (video coming up shortly).

As for The Frankenstein Complex, it’s a straight forward documentary focusing on the creation of monsters in film and the movement of technology, such as animatronic puppetry and latex appliances, which helped revolutionize the industry back in the bygone era of the 1980s.

If you’re a fan of all the magic that goes into the art of conceptualizing, philosophy and the creation of monsters with rubber and odd materials, then you’ll instantly fall in love with The Frankenstein Complex.

CREATURE DESIGNERS: THE FRANKENSTEIN COMPLEX

CREATURE DESIGNERS: THE FRANKENSTEIN COMPLEX

The documentary features over an hour of interviews with the rock stars of the genre-movie business of such as Greg Nicotero, Matt Winston, Rick Baker, Steve Johnson, Phil Tippett, including directors John Landis, Joe Dante and del Toro, just to name a small few. Expect to see some never-before-seen footage (at least none I have seen) from the making of Jurassic Park, The Abyss, Gremlins, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, and Alien. I’m sure that I have missed a few other titles, but I think you get the point.

The Verdict

The only disappointment I have with The Frankenstein Complex is that it doesn’t present many facts that I didn’t already know. There’s a few hidden gems here and there, but nothing much to get excited about. This is obviously coming from a guy who watched a bunch “making of” double discs and video clips on YouTube. But if you never watched those extras on Blu-rays and DVDs, then you will easily be impressed with this documentary. So I highly recommend you check it out if that’s the case.

Universal Trying To Tap Javier Bardem As Frankenstein For Monster Movies https://www.yellmagazine.com/universal-taps-javier-bardem-frankenstein-monster-movies/110510/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/universal-taps-javier-bardem-frankenstein-monster-movies/110510/#respond Tue, 12 Jul 2016 14:38:08 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=110510 Horror hounds will be happy to hear that Universal is getting close to tapping another mega Hollywood star to play a key role in upcoming monster movies based on Mary Shelley’s classic 18th century novels.

We previously reported Russell Crowe will portray the classic literary characters Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde alongside Tom Cruise in the universe’s inaugural film, The Mummy. If you missed the casting news on Cruise, well, he is officially on board to play a special forces soldier in the horror picture.

Now, THR is reporting that Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) is in early negotiations to potentially star as Frankenstein in the studio’s cinematic universe. At the moment, it’s still unclear if Bardem will officially portray either Dr. Frankenstein or Frankenstein’s monster, but the actor is expected to appear in the overall rebooted. Apparently, Bardem was up for the role of Jekyll/Hyde, but the part ultimately went Crowe.

Bride of Frankenstein is currently in the works and THR also just revealed that a standalone Frankenstein film has been green lit. So, stay tuned to Yell! Magazine for much more updated to come.

Russell Crowe Confirmed To Play Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in The Mummy https://www.yellmagazine.com/russell-crowe-confirmed-play-dr-henry-jekyll-mr-hyde-mummy/108441/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/russell-crowe-confirmed-play-dr-henry-jekyll-mr-hyde-mummy/108441/#respond Sun, 08 May 2016 15:55:40 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=108441 The hunt for Dr. Jekyll and his alter ego, Mr. Hyde, in Universal Pictures’ The Mummy appears to be complete. Following rumors earlier this week that Russell Crowe (Gladiator, Romper Stomper) was going to join the cast of The Mummy to play the classic dual personality character – reports now confirm the rumor is completely true!

In an interview with Collider, the Award-Winning actor officially stated that he is on board to play both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde alongside other Hollywood stars such as Tom Cruise, Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis, Courtney B. Vance, and Sofia Boutella as The Mummy.

Crowe said,

Yeah, I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna play Dr. Henry Jekyll, Fellow of the Royal Society. It’s very interesting, what they’re gonna do with that stuff. I’ve had a couple of chats about it with the director (Alex Kurtzman).

At the moment, it sounds like Universal Pictures is using the forthcoming Mummy to introduce Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to audiences before Crowe stars in his own movie as the characters.

Previous reports pointed to actors Tom Hardy and Javier Bardem were in the running to play the characters. From my understanding, the studio’s ultimate goal is to create a shared cinematic universe for the Universal Monsters just like Marvel’s on-going universe with The Avengers, which introduces all the characters from the comic books.

The Mummy will be directed by Alex Kurtzman from a screenplay by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange, Prometheus). It’s slated to hit theaters on June 9th, 2017.

The Mummy Synopsis

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Nosferatu Gets A Remake, Development In Progress https://www.yellmagazine.com/nosferatu-remake-development-progress/102237/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/nosferatu-remake-development-progress/102237/#respond Tue, 28 Jul 2015 22:39:19 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=102237 Nosferatu remake

If you’re a fan of classic monster films, especially one that dates as old as 1922, then you will be happy to hear that Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is getting remade and is already in development at Studio 8 with Robert Eggers (The Witch) set to pen and helm the remake. Nosferatu is a German Expressionist horror film, which is still regarded as one the most eerie horror films of all time. The classic was directed by F. W. Murnau, starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok.

As for the remake, it’s currently untitled, however, it will most likely be based again on Bram Stoker’s classic novel, Dracula. Producing the Studio 8 project are Jay Van Hoy and Lars Knudsen’s Parts and Labor.

We will continue to follow up on the remake, so make sure you stay tuned to Yell! Magazine for further updates on Nosferatu.

Nosferatu Synopsis

An unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nosferatu is the quintessential silent vampire film, crafted by legendary German director F. W. Murnau (Sunrise, Faust, The Last Laugh). Rather than depicting Dracula as a shape-shifting monster or debonair gentleman, Murnau’s Graf Orlok (as portrayed by Max Schreck) is a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulbous head and taloned claws — perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirism yet envisioned. Nosferatu was an atypical expressionist film in that much of it was shot on location. While directors such as Lang and Lubitsch built vast forests and entire towns within the studio, Nosferatu’s landscapes, villages and castle were actual locations in the Carpathian mountains. Murnau was thus able to infuse the story with the subtle tones of nature: both pure and fresh as well as twisted and sinister.
