Godfather Empire Review For iPhone – Or: Leave The Gun, Download The App https://www.yellmagazine.com/godfather-empire-review-iphone/18073/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/godfather-empire-review-iphone/18073/#respond Mon, 15 Aug 2011 14:10:33 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=18073 Yell! Magazine review:

Odds are, when Francis Ford Coppola finished making The Godfather in 1972, the furthest thing from his mind was the eternal question: “I wonder if they’ll ever make an App for this…?” Here we are in 2011 and somebody somewhere finally answered that fictional query. Finally, there IS a Godfather app, available completely free on iTunes.

Ever wonder how to translate a multi-generational crime saga to iPhone? Simple. Completely ignore the entirety of the sweeping storyline and settle for creating another Lifestyle Simulator, similar in tone and concept to Mafia Wars and its legion of clones, such as Original Gangstaz, Global War, Street Racing, Couch Potato and Useless Unemployed Lazy Ass Bum. Ok, admittedly I made up a few of those. But I’d totally play a Lazy Bum App. Well, I wouldn’t actually PLAY it since that would defeat the purpose.

Anyway.

You are [Enter Wiseguy Name Here], a low-level enforcer in the Corleone crime family, headed up by Marlon Brando’s cotton-mouthed Don. According to the fine folks at gangstaname.com, my mob name is Anemic Cosimo Delucci, so that’s what I picked. In the tradition of countless games before it, Godfather Empire tasks you with completing missions to earn XP, buying up property to generate income and picking fights with fellow gamers for monetary and experience rewards. What’s unique about Godfather Empire is that everything is era-specific. You won’t find any nuclear bombs or M60 machine guns here. It’s all revolvers, tommy guns and other, more low-tech means of destruction.

Godfather Empire Screenshot
Weapons Of Mass Destruction, circa 1936.

Missions involve sabotage, muscling weaker mobs out of their territories, recruiting new thugs to add to your mob and the ever-popular “whacking” or some poor sucker who no doubt had it coming. Hey, I’m a soldier, I don’t get paid to ask questions. Leveling through missions is standard fare for the genre but my biggest pet peeve with Godfather Empire rests in its combat, which is unintuitive and a bit broken. The fighting relies on a sort of rock/paper/scissors mechanic, which is frustrating and seemingly random. Also, it’s entirely possible to dominate much more powerful opponents only to turn around and get spanked by a seemingly harmless player.

Other weaknesses include requiring the player to have a huge number of fellow App owners in his gang before tackling certain missions, leveling becomes painfully slow at higher levels and a general lack of polish in teaching players how certain aspects of the game works. The familiar Godfather theme plays continuously, wearing out its welcome very early on. On the bright side, graphics are pleasing to the eye and character artwork is very detailed and engaging.

Smile, Frank! Aw come on, just a little smile for the camera!

The Verdict: [rating:3]

Overall, Godfather Empire is a pretty decent game. As far as this genre goes, you could do worse. Any of the Storm8 produced games, for example. It’s not innovative but it is worth checking out.

Original Gangstaz Review For iPhone – Or: Yo Dawgs! Be Cool! Don’t Start None, Won’t Be None! Chill, Ya Dig! And Other Such Utterances https://www.yellmagazine.com/original-gangstaz-review-iphone/17739/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/original-gangstaz-review-iphone/17739/#respond Mon, 08 Aug 2011 14:10:19 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=17739 Yell! If I play another zombie or tower defense game I’ll spontaneously combust. And the bosses wouldn’t like that, they just had the office vacuumed and nothing gets ash stains and melted down human fat out of the carpet. I had to learn that one the hard way. Funny story. I’ll tell you some time. Luckily, there’s another popular genre filled with fun titles out there that doesn’t involve either undead or fortifications. I call these games Lifestyle Simulators. Original Gangstaz is one of the best, it’s currently available in several different flavors, all of them free, on the App Store.

You are [Enter Badass Hood Name Here] and you can progress through the hallowed halls of Gangsta’s Paradise in several different ways. Completing missions nets you XP, cash and trinkets to outfit your chosen bad boy with. Playing amateur slum lord by buying real estate (read: crack houses, crack whore houses, etc) gains you huge sums of cash at regular intervals. Fighting rival gang members and the occasional boss character that pop up when participating in missions rounds out the overall experience.

Original Gangstaz screenshot
Damn it, mom! Stop popping caps in my ass!

It’s nothing new. It’s the basic Mafia Wars formula with a hoodlum twist. What sets Original Gangstaz ahead of its competitors is the atmosphere. Graphics are appropriately sleazy, with half-naked chicks serving to illustrate everything from bodyguards to chemists.

Original Gangstaz screenshot
One’s a biochemist, the other one’s a ho ho ho’.

The sound effects are great, especially the mission-centric ones which are on-topic yet strangely chuckle-worthy. Boss characters are hilarious parodies of popular real-life artists. Fiance is a Beyonce clone, 6-Pack is an obvious nod to Tupac, so on and so forth. Leveling is fast in the early going, slows down considerably in the mid-fifties and picks up once you pass the 100 marker. Speed depends on the type of player you are. Pumping all my points into fighting rival gangs didn’t seem to work for me, dumping everything into stamina for missions and defense to ward off attackers seemed to be the fastest way to level. You can of course purchase boosts, stat recharges and several other items in the game’s online store, all of which will cost you anywhere from a measly buck to a Franklin. Daily lotto tickets are awarded for logging in, which earn you cash or powerful items.

Original Gangstaz screenshot
Aw, another freaking Uzi. I know what the kids are getting for Xmas this year…

I absolutely love Original Gangstaz and plan on keeping it on my iPhone for the long term. The music, the graphics, the atmosphere dripping with dirty, sexy charm… It’s a keeper.

Hello, It is time for yet another iPhone game review. We’re taking a look at Tesla Wars, currently available free for a limited time on the App Store. This is your humble reviewer, along with special co-host Cthulhu who is back for his second appearance due to popular demand and/or threats to my ongoing slippery grasp on sanity. Say “Hi!” to the fans, Cthulhu!

Cthulhu

What? You’ve never even met my mother! And she’s still dating that Dagon dude, so keep your slimy tentacles off her. Now shut up and help me review this thing. OK, what we have here is, say it with me, folks: yet another Tower Defense game. I could try to count the number of TD games crowding the App Store, but odds are I’d end up collection my first Social Security check long before reaching the halfway point. That is assuming the U.S. economy still exists this time next week and we’re not all eating the neighbor’s kids and siphoning fuel from their gigantic yellow Hummers just to get to work. Sorry. I got exposed to my neighbor’s bee-colored new truck the other day, it was so freaking bright I can still see it when I close my eyes. Damn thing’s burned into my retinas.

The heck was I saying? Yo! Elder Dude, take over while I recapture my train of thought. Darn thing went choo-choo somewhere out of reach again…

Army Of Darkness Defense For iPhone: A MiniMatt Review https://www.yellmagazine.com/army-of-darkness-defense-iphone-ipad-review/16053/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/army-of-darkness-defense-iphone-ipad-review/16053/#respond Fri, 15 Jul 2011 18:10:26 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=16053 Yell! Yawn! Another day, another tower defense game in the App Store. It seems like there’s nothing but TD and Zombie games in there nowadays. But wait, faithful readers, what’s this? Chainsaw hands? Double-barreled, S-Mart shotguns? A square-jawed, impossibly handsome, wise-ass hero stuck in some plague-infested locale fighting off hordes of the undead? This can only mean one thing…

Army of Darkness: Defense for iPhone

Bingo night at the old folks home?

No, no, no… much less horrible than that. Don’t break out the Bengay just yet. This is a review of Army Of Darkness Defense, available on the App Store for the grand sum of zip, squat and nada. For absolutely nothing you can get about 1-2 day’s worth of excitement off this thing, depending on your skill at fighting off increasing waves of Deadites. There’s a total of 50 waves to conquer, with some devilishly clever ones at later levels. Once the game starts throwing boss units at you, it can get a bit hard. Once you’ve mastered all 50 levels, you can unlock an endless wave mode and share your high scores with friends online.

Tower Defense games live or die based on the variety of troops and weapons you can unleash on invaders and Army Of Darkness, being based on Sam Raimi’s immortal Evil Dead franchise, ranks right up there with the best of them. You control Ash Williams as he moves left or right across the screen, chainsaw and trusty shotgun in tow. As Ash, you can have two special abilities equipped at any time, switching between them at the start of each wave. You have your shotgun blast, a catapult strike, spell books to swallow enemies or randomly summon soldiers to your side and, best of all, you can call on your modified Deathcoaster (actually Ash’s car) to mow down the undead like tenpins.

Army of darkness: Defense for iPhone screenshot

Groovy!

Troops run the gamut from low-level peasants (basically cannon fodder) to high-level movie character hero units like Arthur and Henry The Red. Achieving success means finding the right combination of units and triggered abilities to overcome any given wave’s unit composition. It’s relatively easy, I managed to beat the game in about two days of moderate play time. All in all, a very fun game, with nice graphics and sounds, though you’ll get tired of hearing Ash’s famous lines repeated over and over again.

It’s free, it’s a great time-waster, its based on one of the coolest movies ever made. Go get it! THIS I COMMAND!

EA Sports MMA for iPhone Review https://www.yellmagazine.com/ea-sports-mma-iphone-review/933/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/ea-sports-mma-iphone-review/933/#respond Thu, 04 Nov 2010 01:29:53 +0000 https://yellmagazine.com/index-temp.php/?p=933 EA Sports MMA for iPhone/iPad was released on October 20th in Apple’s App Store for 4.99$. I managed to get my hands on a copy and, well, here’s what I think about it.

Right off the bat, I can tell you that this is the only MMA fighting game currently in the App Store and in that regard it is way ahead of the competition (which is no one at this point). With that being said, the game does have a few issues when it comes to playability, but overall, it is a pretty fun and unique experience.

EA Sports MMA for iPhone screenshots

For starters, the minute you start playing the game you are immediately thrown into a tutorial that teaches you all the essentials of gameplay, which is a pretty good thing since most people would probably get right into the action. The tutorial covers Standing, Clinch and Ground, giving you a step by step lesson in the controls of the game and the many different ways to use them. The only problem with the gameplay lies in the movement, which requires you to tilt the iPhone left or right to move ahead or step backwards and a quick tilt towards or against your body to side step. It’s pretty tedious, but if you don’t mind it than plus one for you.

As for the features the game has 3 modes that’ll easily keep you busy for a while. You have the options to play in Exhitibition, Career or Challenge mode. Exhibition allows you to play a quick fight using any one of the 24 available fighters (all real MMA fighters by the way). Not to mention the option to choose the location (USA x2, London, Brazil and Japan) of the fight along with the ring type (hexagon, squared ring or circular cage) as well.

If Exhibition mode doesn’t do it for you then you can tackle the challenging, umm, Challenge mode. Challenge mode has 25 specific scenarios for you to play where you have to defeat your opponent with a designated fighter or special condition of sorts. For example, one challenge requires you to fight Brett Rogers using Fedor and to beat Rogers by KO in the 2nd round, which for someone like me proved difficult as I was quick to finish most fights in the first round.

After you’ve given up on attempting beating Mayhem Miller by decision using Jake Shields you can move on to Career mode. Career mode immediately puts you into create a fighter mode, where you can create your own custom fighter (name, looks, tattoos, gear and attitude) and choose one of three weight classes (Lightweight, Middleweight, Heavyweight) and 8 fighting styles (Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Kickboxing, Judo, Boxing, Sambo, and Sanshou) each with their own pros and cons. As you progress through your career you get skill points after each fight and the option of training before each fight. Each training scenario is unique in that it uses the iPhone’s touch screen in different ways.

The four training modes before each career fight are designed to increase one or more of your fighter’s skill sets. You can spar to increase striking, grappling, submission and takedowns. You can hit the speed bag to increase your speed. You can hit the heavy bag to increase your stamina, and the last training option is lift weights to increase your health.

EA Sports MMA for iPhone gameplay

Aside from the movement of the fighters the game is pretty fun, sure the graphics are a bit choppy at times, but this is an iPhone game, and well, you shouldn’t buy into that too much. The game also features a pretty solid soundtrack that ranges from heavy metal to hip hop. The commentating also makes a decent attempt to keep players entertained. Another added bonus for anyone on an iPhone 4 or the latest iPod Touch is the cleaner graphics that the retina display adds which gives it a bit more visual clarity and a bit more realism (not taking anything away from people using older versions of iPhone or iPod, the game still plays rather well).

All in all, the game is not a bad purchase coming in at 4.99$ and will provide you with hours of fun when you need to kill a little time. If you still need more convincing then check out the video below of the game in action (with a real person playing it).
