Directed by Shane Abbess (Infini, Gabriel), who also co-wrote the film with Brian Cachia (Infini), the film stars Kellan Lutz (Twilight franchise), Daniel MacPherson (The Shannara Chronicles, APB), Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Knight of Cups), Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith), with Rachel Griffiths (Hacksaw Ridge, Six Feet Under), and Teagan Croft, making her feature film debut.

The Osiris Child is expected to be in theaters and On Demand in the fall of 2017.

The Osiris Child Synopsis:

The Osiris Child is set in a time of interplanetary colonization. Sy Lombrok (Kellan Lutz), a drifter with a haunted past, forms an unlikely alliance with Kane Sommerville (Daniel MacPherson), a lieutenant who works for off-world military contractor Exor. In a race against time, they set out to rescue Kane’s young daughter Indi (Teagan Croft) amid an impending global crisis created by Exor.

About the movie, Abbess said:

We wanted to bring back a type of movie that seemed all but extinct — the old school sci-fi action/adventure from the ‘80s with monsters, prison planets, sky battles, and a host of fun, colorful characters. It’s a big universe with a huge story arc and we’re ecstatic to introduce it to the world with this first installment.

the Osiris Child

The Osiris Child is produced by Matthew Graham, Brett Thornquest, Sidonie Abbene, and Abbess via their Storm Alley and Eclectik Vision banners, in association with Phonetic Images and executive produced by Steven Matusko. The producing team previously collaborated on Infini and Terminus, and, most recently, the upcoming thriller Better Watch Out.

Dune Reboot To Potentially Be Directed By Denis Villeneuve https://www.yellmagazine.com/dune-potentially-directed-denis-villeneuve/114531/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/dune-potentially-directed-denis-villeneuve/114531/#respond Thu, 22 Dec 2016 23:01:29 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=114531 Earlier this week, Legendary Entertainment and the Frank Herbert estate finally reached an agreement granting the production entity the film and television motion picture rights to the beloved novel Dune.

The first film in 1984 was based on the 1965 novel of the same name directed by David Lynch, but it was an incomprehensible mess from start to finish. Over three decades later, producers are eyeing a proper Dune reboot with production to potentially begin fairly soon.

According to Variety, there’s already “early talks” of having Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) direct Dune from a freshly written screenplay.

Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.

Dune has long been considered the crown jewel of science fiction properties. Its legacy and influence is witnessed in everything from Star Wars to The Matrix and often referred to as the science fiction version of Lord of the Rings with its sprawling world and multi-dimensional politics.

The projects would be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.

Shockwave Darkside (2014) Movie Review – Let’s Bury This In A Deep Dark Hole https://www.yellmagazine.com/shockwave-darkside-2014-movie-review/106128/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/shockwave-darkside-2014-movie-review/106128/#respond Sat, 23 Jan 2016 20:36:45 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=106128 Shockwave Darkside, written and directed by Jay Weisman, attempts to tell a tried-and-tested story in a new setting, but ultimately fails to succeed on many levels. The story was confusing, the actors selected for their roles weren’t convincing (although the acting wasn’t terrible), the CG were cutting-edge if this had been made in 1990, the costumes were atrocious, and it ultimately doesn’t live up to its synopsis.

For your reference, here’s the synopsis:

It is the last, great war. Out of the wreckage of a troop transport, five soldiers on the way to battle find themselves stranded on the dark side of the moon. Cut off and behind enemy lines, they start a dangerous journey through snipers and minefields back to their home territory. As their numbers dwindle and nerves fray, they make an amazing discovery about the moon that just might save their lives.

shockwave_darkside_still

It’s a cool idea, having two factions, one being banished humans and the other possibly being alien, and having an outpost on the moon in search of frozen water, but there’s no real sense of urgency, much less a terrible war going. I guess that was just one of limitations the filmmakers encountered with this low-budget project.

Another, but not the last, budgetary problem was with the CG. It’s questionable whether or not things could have been worse. The spacecrafts and the explosions look like they belong in a video game prototype. They’re godawful, and based on those alone the filmmakers should have second guessed the decision to release the movie.

shockwave_darkside_spacecraft

Related to the CG is the effect to show the audience the heads-up display that the characters see. When they showed it, it dominated the screen, making it difficult to see or focus on anything else. Honestly, we could have lived with seeing this treat once, but as it turns out the makers loved it and used the effect relentlessly, which was a horrible idea.

I’m not even going to get into the wardrobe. If you want to know, just watch the trailer:

Not for lack of effort on the actors’ part, but none of them made believable soldiers. I won’t go into it much more than that because I know that each one of them did their best. I will say, however, that despite the synopsis, there really isn’t much of a “as their numbers dwindle” going on here. At least it didn’t feel like it, and when someone does die there isn’t any real sense of loss that puts the party in peril.

UPDATE: New Predator Movie Is Not A Reboot, But An “Inventive Sequel” https://www.yellmagazine.com/update-predator-movie-reboot-inventive-sequel/86567/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/update-predator-movie-reboot-inventive-sequel/86567/#respond Fri, 27 Jun 2014 19:50:20 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=86567 Predator

News broke out a few days ago that FOX has plans to bring back the Predator in a reboot and put Shane Black in the director’s chair to helm the project from a script by longtime friend Fred Dekker. Fortunately, the rumor still remains true, however, it has now been revealed that the new Predator movie is going to be more of a sequel than a reboot, according to Shane in a report by Collider.

That’s right! Not just another franchise reboot like all the others floating around that studio’s keep rebooting, but an “inventive sequel.” This means that Shane will continue to explore and expand the existing Predator mythology, which he believes is already rich.

Shane previously directed Iron Man 3 and Kiss Kiss Bang Ban, and was also responsible for co-writting the 1987 horror comedy Monster Squad, including Lethal Weapon and Night of the Creeps.

Shane also played the role of Rick Hawkins in the original Predator movie. Remember, the skinny dude with the glasses?

Tom Cruise Stars In Edge of Tomorrow, Watch First Official Trailer Here [VIDEO] https://www.yellmagazine.com/tom-cruise-stars-edge-tomorrow-watch-official-trailer-video/74711/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/tom-cruise-stars-edge-tomorrow-watch-official-trailer-video/74711/#respond Thu, 12 Dec 2013 01:55:36 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=74711 It looks like Tom Cruise is stuck in science-fiction limbo since Oblivion because he has another one in that genre coming out soon entitled Edge of Tomorrow. Originally titled All You Need Is Kill, the film is like a mix of Mechwarriors and Saving Private Ryan with all the eye candy visuals an uber nerd can ask for. So I guess it targets me and so far I really like what I see. Story-wise, it just looks like another Hollywood pile of shit, rehashed from a dozen other films. In my opinion, anyone who thinks Edge of Tomorrow will have a compelling story is just getting ready for a train wreck. I didn’t get a chance to read the Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka yet, but anyone who is interested in the film may want to pick it before it hits the big screen.

Edge of Tomorrow will be released by Warner Bros. on June 6, 2014.

About Edge of Tomorrow

The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Casper Van Dien Interview At Fantasia On Starship Troopers: Invasion [VIDEO] https://www.yellmagazine.com/casper-van-dien-interview-starship-troopers-invasion-video-fantasia-2012/37208/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/casper-van-dien-interview-starship-troopers-invasion-video-fantasia-2012/37208/#respond Thu, 26 Jul 2012 18:59:16 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=37208 Johnny Rico, Starship TroopersWe caught up to the outrageously spectacular Casper Van Dien (aka, Johnny Rico) at Fantasia. When we entered the building, we thought we were being attacked by bugs. All we could hear was Casper screaming. Turns out he was screaming into some fan’s video camera, but in a good way. If there’s one thing Casper isn’t, it’s mean. The dude was totally polite, if you can bear his extreme personality.

Anyway, before Casper got pulled away for an industry dinner, we had the chance to interview him about his recently screened Starship Troopers: Invasion, for which he was the executive producer. If Casper talked up Director Shinji Aramaki any more than he did, you’d suspect him of fabricating a murder alibi. We also gave him the opportunity to plug his upcoming film, The Pact. He plays a cop and says we won’t dislike him; that’s all that he would tell us. Casper did pull the film’s producer, Ross M. Dinerstein, into the interview, and he was even less informative, basically telling us the film is a ghost story. The poster looks terrifying, nonetheless.

MIB III (2012) Review: Somehow, I Feel Like I’ve Seen This All Before https://www.yellmagazine.com/mib-iii-2012-review/33455/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/mib-iii-2012-review/33455/#respond Mon, 28 May 2012 01:59:58 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=33455 Yell! Magazine’s MIB III review

Well, it’s been 14 years since Men in Black hit made its way to theaters and wowed audiences with snappy writing, fantastic effects, and a buddy-cop pairing that was actually a pretty damn good idea. The experience left us with a vague feeling of whimsy, wonder, and the absurdity of an intergalactic peace-keeping group, that’s gotta deal with talking pugs and giant beetles in “Edgar Suits.”

Now, MIB III’s finally rolled around, and at best, highlights the fact that we’re all a decade and a half older. It feels dated, perfunctory, and is pretty much the definition of a movie that exists solely to be rented.

Or observed upon over Netflix. Whichever.

Boris the Animal (Jemaine Clement) has finally been freed from space prison, and proceeds to kill as many extras and unnamed secondary characters as possible to prove just how eeevil he is. His next move? Travel backward through time and kill Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) for shooting off of his arm and incarcerating him on the moon. Once Agent J  (Will Smith) gets wind of this (after getting caught in a temporal rift or something like that) he decides that he doesn’t like that kind of thing, and sets off to the faraway land of 1969 to do battle once again, and save the universe – for rizzy.

As you can tell by the light and fluffy synopsis just delivered, MIB III grounds itself from the start as a flick that’s simply meant to be an exercise in distraction and explosion-induced entertainment. It boasts a fair amount of comedy, mostly stemming from a certain alternate universe-perceiving side character, as well as the very aspect of the convolution of time travel itself, but still, somehow, something about MIB III feels like it’s too little, too late.

What we’re working with here, is something of a recycled version of the last film – which itself was something of a recycled version of the film before it. Agent J moves from place to place on the trail of Evil Alien Number X, interrogates other aliens with hilariously dysfunctional physiologies (like that guy with balls on his chin) and then has a showdown wherein he faces off against said antagonist, who’ll probably transform into something bigger before exploding into a mass of translucent goo.

Men in Black 3

The exception here being that this freak doesn’t even get to transform.

And by God, it worked very well, the first time around. The dialogue was sharp, witty, and laid emphasis on the obscure mundanity of the men in black themselves. Will Smith’s hip-hop flava (flav) was contrasted against the straight-edge, tie-sporting organization he fights for, and in the end, it was something new.

The third time around, most of the wit and charm is completely gone, and anything that fueled that feeling of novelty is missing entirely. MIB III feels routine. It feels forced. It feels like it was written by a 16 year-old who read a pamphlet on black-American culture.

That seems to be the main problem with trying to do in 2012 what worked very well in the ’90s. The main source of humor – 90% of the jokes – come from Will Smith doing (for lack of a better word) black guy stuff to inhabitants of the late ’60s. Thing is, American culture has kind of cross-pollinated with itself so much, that this kind of depiction of the  “Average Hip Black American Gentleman” doesn’t really fly anymore.

Find out what NoFaceNorm really thinks of MIB III after the jump…
