Founded in 1984, the band took the metal scene by storm with their debut 1989 release, Alice In Hell, upped the ante with 1990’s Never, Neverland and has continued a non-stop career-pattern of releasing records and touring with many of the biggest bands in the metal genre (mostly all outside North America), ever since. This hard work has cemented Annihilator as the biggest-selling heavy metal act in Canada’s history.

After 18 months of touring for the band’s latest album, Suicide Society (nominated for a 2017 Juno Award in the Metal/Hard Rock Album of The Year category), the band is currently finishing up their 16th studio release and is getting ready to headline not only the mighty Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany (August 3rd), but hit the road for their first Canadian tour since 1993.

The tour will see the band kick off their first date in Victoria, BC, on June 13th, and travel east wrapping up the tour in Cornwall, Ontario, July 1st, during Canada day weekend festivities. For a full list of dates, visit https://www.annihilatormetal.com/tour . This is very big news for Canadian metal fans, both young and “older” who have been waiting for an Annihilator tour to return to Canadian soil for over 20 years!

Support on this tour comes from Australia’s Mason (who was Annihilator’s support in Europe last year) and Montreal’s Mutank (who won the acclaimed Wacken Metal Battle Canada contest in 2014 and have also performed at Wacken Open Air).

annihilator_canada_tour_dates 750

Annihilator’s founder, Jeff Waters (and guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, producer, engineer, mix engineer, mastering engineer, manager, etc.) was asked how it feels to be “back” touring his home country:

I have always enjoyed flying the flag for one of the nicest countries and people in the world, despite having very little support from the industry here to play and releasing CDs in Canada. It sure is an honor to be nominated for a Juno, after all these years, and to have the opportunity to tour this great and metal land! It will be some of our best-ever shows this summer. We look forward to meeting the metal fans and to show them what the rest of the world has seen us do every year for decades. It’s about time, eh?!

Annihilator has given the metal world a sound that is one of the clearest, most-tasteful mixtures of huge, metal riffs with the idea of the perfect song and some legendary solo shredding as the icing on the cake. Jeff Waters and Annihilator have been a major influence on countless well-known metal acts and musicians around the world. In fact, countless, successful non-metal acts and musicians cite Waters and company as an influence in their careers.

All Hell Returns With The Grave Alchemist https://www.yellmagazine.com/all-hell-returns-grave-alchemist/117002/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/all-hell-returns-grave-alchemist/117002/#respond Wed, 29 Mar 2017 01:06:49 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=117002 Following up on last year’s critically acclaimed LP, The Red Sect, North Carolina’s All Hell returns with their Prosthetic Records debut, The Grave Alchemist.

Produced by Kris Hilbert (The Body), who worked with the band on The Red Sect and mixed and mastered by Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust), The Grave Alchemist will see a worldwide release on April 14th. Featuring 12 driving, raucous blackened thrash hymns, the album reveals a marked maturity and growth for these Asheville natives who previously wore their punk rock roots on their proverbial sleeves. The album is a narrative-driven horror concept album that weaves a tale of alchemy, necromancy, and vampirism over the span of three centuries. It is a potent blend of violence, mysticism, psychology, and the occult, distilled into an aural elixir of blood and gold.

The Grave Alchemist will see worldwide release via Prosthetic Records on CD, LP, and digital formats. Pre-orders are available here.

About All Hell:

Spawned in the dark hills of Asheville, North Carolina, in 2013, and influenced by a wide array of genres from punk to thrash to “first wave” black metal to ‘80s deathrock and beyond, All Hell has relentlessly churned out their stygian works while spreading their volatile live show to eager audiences.

All_Hell_Grave_Alchemist_album_cover

All Hell self-released their debut, The Devil’s Work, in 2014, and played with bands such as 1349, Black Tusk, Ghoul, and labelmates, Skeletonwitch. A year later, All Hell released their second offering, The Red Sect, which was released through HPGD Productions. No Clean Singing called the album, “A thoroughly electrifying romp; a ripping rampage of thrashing riffs, punk rhythms, and mad-dog snarls. Hooky as hell and as nasty as a famished wolverine.” Prosthetic Records soon signed the band and reissued the album on LP and CD worldwide. The band hit the road in support of that album, sharing the stage with the likes of Venom Inc., Toxic Holocaust, Lord Dying, Ramming Speed, Horrendous, and many more.

With the release of The Grave Alchemist, All Hell has expanded their sound while infusing different elements to create a unique blend all their own. Fans of Bathory, Celtic Frost, Samhain, Satyricon, Skeletonwitch, Goatwhore, Toxic Holocaust and the like, pay heed.

All Hell will bring their deviousness to the stage for a short run of live dates this spring with additional live incursions in the plotting stages.

Overkill’s “Shine On” Is A Shredder https://www.yellmagazine.com/overkill-shine-on-shredder-video/116813/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/overkill-shine-on-shredder-video/116813/#respond Thu, 23 Mar 2017 00:45:08 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=116813 As we’ve mentioned before, Overkill is back with a new album. The Grinding Wheel, released last month, debuted at number 69 on the Billboard 200, which makes it the band’s second highest chart position. It also makes a case that old-school thrash metal by old-school bands still commands attention!

Check out the thrash attack in the recently released track “Shine On”; it’s heavy, shredding, and, toward the end, shows a bit of dimension.

Power Trip Show Review (2017-03-08) https://www.yellmagazine.com/power-trip-show-review-2017-03-08/116554/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/power-trip-show-review-2017-03-08/116554/#respond Sun, 12 Mar 2017 02:29:43 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=116554 We were supposed to have an interview with Dallas, Texas’ thrash metal warriors, Power Trip, but, as is far too often the case, there was an issue at the border with their touring partners, Iron Reagan, and the bands only made it to the venue with time to set up and get on stage (at least that’s how we’re assessing the situation). C’mon Canada, get your act together and realize that these smaller bands are nose-to-the-grindstone blue-collar workers just trying to earn a dollar and when you detain them you jeopardize their livelihood.

While the interview didn’t happen, we were there for the show, which was insane, but that is the way it goes at Montreal’s Foufounes Electriques (Foufs). This venue, which is actually a small stage upstairs from the bar, might be the last vestige in Montreal dedicated to letting metalheads be metalheads, where stage dives aren’t just accepted but encouraged, where the pit (in a closed space with hard floors and structural supports nearby) gets wild and violent, where the soundboard gets bumped and pushed an inch here and an inch there.

After two warm up bands plus Iron Reagan, which was actually a ragtag group of stand-in band members (remember the border holdup) playing with no practice and killing it, Power Trip opened strong with their thrash metal heritage on full display. Kicking off their set were the first two tracks from their newly released album, Nightmare Logic, “Soul Sacrifice” and “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe).” These tracks got the crowd into a frenzy before breaking into a mix of tracks from the band’s EPs and previous album, Manifest Decimation.

Power Trip’s new album, Nightmare Logic, comes out Feb. 22, 2017.

What I really like about Power Trip is that they are a band with no frills; you see what you get. Listen to their album, it’s tight; see them live, they’re tight. If it’s the music you love, it’s the music you get. Vocalist Riley Gale also commands the stage with a Texas-size swagger and confidence that commands respect. It’s almost like watching a young Phil Anselmo in his early years with Pantera.

If there’s one small show to see, you have to make it Power Trip.

Warbringer, Take Cover! It’s “Shellfire” https://www.yellmagazine.com/warbringer-cover-its-shellfire/116187/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/warbringer-cover-its-shellfire/116187/#respond Sun, 26 Feb 2017 00:14:29 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=116187 The highly anticipated Warbringer album, Woe to the Vanquished, is set to be released on March 31st, via Napalm Records.

After having previously released the first music video for the track “Silhouettes” (see it below), it’s time to fire another shot from their upcoming release! Singer John Kevill commented about the track premiere “Shellfire,” which you can catch on this page:

As we near the release of our fifth record, Woe to the Vanquished, we want to show you guys something that will blow some heads off. We wrote this song with the intention of it being the fastest Warbringer song to date, which it is. The music, composed by Carlos Cruz, is a ripping bombardment of riffs and rapid-fire fills with a crushing detonation of a middle section. The lyrics, inspired by the seemingly endless battles on the Western Front of World War One, are full of anger, bitterness, and sheer horror, as day after day after day, week after week, the guns never, ever stop. Play it loud and take cover!

Woe to the Vanquished has been carefully crafted over a period of time, the album was produced and mixed by Mike Plottnikoff (Fear Factory, In Flames), mastered by Howie Weinberg (Slayer, Pantera), with cover art by the esteemed Andreas Marschall (Sodom, Blind Guardian, Obituary).

Influenced by Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Motorhead, and Black Sabbath, vocalist and guitarist Giuseppe Mellone announces in a statement of intent these heavy hitters are “here to kick your ass.”

Unleashing their 2016 EP Patient Zero Boston, Intoxicated Rage has 2017 locked and loaded with the upcoming release of their first full-length album, Kill the King, which features roots in traditional metal and thrash metal.

The band is now streaming the first single, the album’s title track, which you can catch right here on Yell! Magazine.

Mellone comments on the release:

We just wanted something that could get the message across of who we are. We are doing that in this album and we will do it again on the next. Currently, we are working on different material that almost breaks through these classifications. We want people to hear us on the radio and automatically identify us from our sound.

Intoxicated Rage’s Kill the King will be available on all major online retailers at a date to be determined in 2017.

Overkill Are “Goddamn Trouble” https://www.yellmagazine.com/overkill-goddamn-trouble/116032/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/overkill-goddamn-trouble/116032/#respond Sun, 19 Feb 2017 15:17:49 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=116032 Long-time thrash metal outfit, Overkill, released their 18th studio album, The Grinding Wheel, earlier this month.

Leading up to the album’s release, Overkill released the official video for “Goddamn Trouble,” and it’s like taking a step back in time. Not only does the track have a classic metal sound, but the video seems to idolize the ‘80s — from the cassette-playing Walkman to the graffiti to the video’s protagonist embodying the stereotype of a metalhead troublemaker. In many ways, that’s how metalheads were perceived back in the day, but now it seems like a dated mentality.

Maybe heavy metal needs to get back to this fire.

Athanasia Release “The Order of the Silver Compass” Video https://www.yellmagazine.com/athanasia-release-the-order-silver-compass-video/115644/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/athanasia-release-the-order-silver-compass-video/115644/#respond Fri, 03 Feb 2017 03:28:28 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=115644 Los Angeles based heavy metal band, Athanasia, blends black metal and thrash metal to create a powerful hesher moment. If you’re not careful, you might just blow your eardrums out. Evidence of their amazing sound can be found on the recently released official music video for the title track from their upcoming debut album, The Order of the Silver Compass. This is the second music video released from the album, following the critically acclaimed “Spoils Of War.” “The Order of the Silver Compass” was directed by renowned filmmaker Matt Zane and filmed at Modern Sector Studios in Burbank, California.

Lead vocalist Caleb Bingham commented:

If you got hooked after your first dose of the potent heavy metal concoction that is Athanasia, then you should be ecstatic to know that your next fix is coming in the form of a speedball entitled “The Order of the Silver Compass” taken from our LP of the same name… Max out your volume knobs and prepare to thrash!!!

Album pre-orders are available here.

Athanasia_-_Photo_by_Chad_Michael_Ward

About Athanasia:

Athanasia is a power trio playing a highly original hybrid of classic arena/black/thrash metal styles. The band was first formed by Caleb Bingham in 2004, under the name Ascension while he was still in high school. As a result of passing around the band’s early demos on the Sunset strip he landed a gig with the then-forming Five Finger Death Punch in 2005. Upon being fired from the group in 2007 (due to his young age) he reformed the band a second time, recording several more unreleased demos and one EP at the behest of veteran Roadrunner Records A&R Monte Conner. Largely due to that label’s merger with WMG, the band lost out on its chance to sign with them and was shelved yet again in 2010, while Bingham played a four year stint with Swedish death metal act Zonaria. Upon parting ways with them due to a leg injury sustained while playing with the group he reformed the band a third time, recording its first full-length release entitled The Order of the Silver Compass. This yet unreleased album is finally about to see the light of day under the new banner of Athanasia!

Rebel Wizard Brings Low-Fi Metal Back With Reissue Of Triumph Of Gloom https://www.yellmagazine.com/rebel-wizard-brings-low-fi-metal-reissue-triumph-gloom/115515/ https://www.yellmagazine.com/rebel-wizard-brings-low-fi-metal-reissue-triumph-gloom/115515/#respond Sat, 28 Jan 2017 02:27:53 +0000 https://www.yellmagazine.com/?p=115515 This is low-fi heavy metal at its best! Negative metal act, Rebel Wizard, will reissue the maniacal sounds of the gritty and raw Triumph of Gloom full-length via Prosthetic Records next month.

Check out the track “Ease of Wretchedness and Wonder” here on Yell! Magazine.

A creation from Australian musician NKSV, who’s most well-known for his work with the black metal/noise group Nekrasov, Rebel Wizard’s delivery is difficult to sum up with one simple label. While containing traces of black and thrash metal roots, with a touch of NWOBHM and the epicness of power metal, NKSV has coined the term “negative metal” to describe Rebel Wizard’s unique output. Negative metal, as defined by NKSV, is an “anarchic alchemical process of outsider energies respecting the power of traditional triumphant metal into a unique sound to smash out the coerced gloom and banality of our times.” The term is not meant to be construed with the sense of depression or nihilism, but instead to focus on self-negation, a doing away of limiting one’s full potential by limiting oneself to a category or label. Rebel Wizard seeks to destroy any hindrance of this sort with triumphant pounding fists.

Described as, “an electrifying, high-intensity collection of absolutely masterful riffs and scintillating lead guitar pyrotechnics, organized into songs that are powerfully addictive from the very first listen” in a review by NoCleanSinging.com, Triumph of Gloom, initially self-released by NKSV will be reissued by Prosthetic Records on February 24th, and will include a previously unheard bonus track, “Defenders of the Gloom.”
