Following the successful victory, Ortiz still holds a personal grudge against Sonnen, who apparently made some disrespectful comments during the Bellator 170 pre-fight press conferences. Specifically for nasty comments made about his family.

Speaking with Fight Hub TV, Ortiz said Sonnen has to apologize publicly in order to squash the bad blood.

I didn’t say anything after the fight. He came to my dressing room and said, ‘Good fight, it was an honor, da da da’ and I go, ‘You’ve got to apologize to me in public.’ So we’re gonna see if he has enough balls to apologize to me in public.

He added,

I’m a kid who has a lot of respect. I believe in respect. Talking about another person’s family is something wrong to do and for what he did, that’s just the wrong thing to do. That’s always my three rules of s**t-talking: You don’t talk about a person’s family, you don’t talk about a person’s country, and you don’t lie about a person. He did all three of those things, and the big man upstairs took care of it.

Ortiz, 42, is a UFC Hall of Famer and one of the most decorated champions in UFC history. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” signed with Bellator in 2013 and has gone 3-1 with the promotion.

He has wins over the likes of Alexander Shlemenko, Stephan Bonnar, Wanderlei Silva, Ken Shamrock and Forrest Griffin.

In the main event, Tito Ortiz and Chael Sonnen successfully made the 205-pound limit for their light heavyweight bout. Paul Daley and Brennan Ward also successfully hit the 170-pound limit for their welterweight bout.

Tito always says I’m using my mouth to get my opportunities. The only person that I know that made money using their mouth is his ex-wife.

Following numerous surgeries over the years, Ortiz believes retirement is now due more than ever. However, if surgery didn’t take its toll on his body we would definitely see Ortiz compete at Bellator events in 2017.

During a Bellator 170 conference call, Ortiz confirmed that he will retire no matter the outcome against Chael Sonnen in two weeks from now.

This retirement is well due, twenty years of competition has pretty much, I’d still be fighting if it wasn’t for my surgeries.

Ortiz noted that his “biggest enemy” has been his body due to all his serious injuries.

My biggest enemy has been my surgeries, I’ve had an ACL replaced in my left knee, ACL replaced in my right knee, 50 percent of my meniscus taken out of my right knee, lower back fusion, C-6, C-7 fused in my neck, C-5, C-4 disk replacement, C-4, C-3 fused. I have 26, 27 concussions, hundreds of stitches, I’ve been through the grinder. My biggest enemy has been my body.

That’s right! In 1998 Sonnen faced Ortiz on his birthday and pinned the former UFC light heavyweight champion in just 44 seconds. I guess their rivalry is pretty damn real and not so rehearsed as seen in press conferences for Bellator MMA.

A few hours ago, Ortiz dropped a video on Instagram comparing his opponent Sonnen to a Thanksgiving turkey that he attempts to inject with butter, which is also a direct comparison to performance-enhancing drugs.

Ortiz said,

I couldn’t stop thinking about what Chael does to himself. Probably not butter. Stuff that he says he gets from a doctor.

He also added,

He is kind of like a turkey. But don’t you know, juice is bad for you.

Before returning to combat sport, Sonnen failed three drug tests throughout his MMA career. Two of them was for UFC 175 against Vitor Belfort, which at one time was linked with long-time rival Wanderlei Silva. The other failed drug test was for UFC 117 against Anderson Silva in August 2010, where Sonnen tested positive for elevated testosterone levels.

On Tuesday, it was initially reported by ESPN that two legends will steps inside the cage in January. That’s right! Sonnen will make his Bellator debut against Tito Ortiz in the main event of Bellator 170 in Los Angeles. The bout was later confirmed on Twitter by Bellator President Scott Coker.

That last time Sonnen entered the cage was at UFC 167 against Rashad Evans. Following the loss, he was expected to face Wanderlei Silva at UFC 175, but due to failed drug tests the highly-anticipated fight never came to fruition.

Ortiz is currently coming off a loss to Liam McGeary the Bellator Light Heavyweight Championship. However, he won an upset to Alexander Shlemenko and defeated Stephan Bonnar at Bellator 131.

Ortiz vs. Sonnen takes place on Saturday, January 21, 2017.

Last week, Sonnen signed an exclusive multi-fight contract with Bellator, but it’s attached to serious provisions which could cost Sonnen a hefty price if he fails his next drug test. Sonnen could face a $500,000 fine and lose “100 percent” of his fight purse.

In July, Sonnen completed his two-year suspension from the Nevada Athletic Commission for failing two out-of-competition tests for his UFC 175 fight against Wanderlei Silva in 2014, which never came to fruition. He tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, so Bellator’s strict new contract is meant to punish him good.

Sonnen said,

If I was to fail a test under my Bellator contract, it would cost me 100 percent of my purse and $500,000. That is in writing. Now, I understand for you guys, that’s not as good as a clean test, but boy, that’s got to mean something. If you think I didn’t read that part of it before I signed it, I did.

I don’t know if that was unique to me or if that was boilerplate and everybody’s got it. I don’t know, but I saw that. That’s before you deal with your commission issues and everything else, but it was right off the top: full purse, $500,000. That’s just to Bellator. That’s before we start dealing with commissions, and again, I don’t know if that was boilerplate or if they set that aside for me. But I’m on the other side of the tracks now, and you wouldn’t believe it if you saw it, I’ve still got the biggest arms in the business.

At the moment, Sonnen doesn’t have an opponent set in stone yet, but it appears like he is targeting a fight with Tito Ortiz in November. Let’s just hope Sonnen keeps off his old habits so we can see him fight soon again.
