You also might have seen, collecting dust, titles like Mad Max, Red Dawn, 1990 The Bronx Warriors, Warriors of the Wasteland (aka, The New Barbarians), Solarbabies, and Steel Dawn.
Paying heavy homage to all of the movies mentioned and their ilk is Turbo Kid, written and directed by François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell. And while the 2015 flick starring Munro Chambers (The Kid), Laurence Leboeuf (Apple), and Michael Ironside (Zeus) bears all kinds of resemblances to the classic genre, right down to synth-heavy score, it feels fresh, fun, and original. Speaking of the music, it’s true that *Turbo Kid actually listens to the theme, “Thunder In Your Heart,” from RAD.
Instead of giving you a play-by-play and spoiling the movie for you, because you really should see it, some of the themes the movie touches on are love, survival, hope, revenge, good versus evil, and the idea that things often come full circle.
The special effects are cool too. Lots of splatter and plenty of gore, and it’s tons of fun to watch. What speaks most in regard to the effects, however, is their limited use. It doesn’t seem like budget limited them, but rather story and plot, and that is precisely why they are so appreciated and probably why they’re so well timed and placed.
The last point I’d like to make here is the acting, which is superbe. Sure, Chambers as The Kid is the central character, and Ironside turns in a strong performance, but it’s Leboeuf who steals the show as Apple. I won’t ruin the “surprise” about her, but her quirkiness and enthusiasm is addictive and a breath of fresh air.
And an honorable performance mention has to be given to Ironside’s silent minion, Skeletron… he’s just awesome!
Turbo Kid is charming, nostalgic, and, best of all, it’s bloody!
]]>Ahead of its theatrical release in 7 days, you can also check out two new clips from the film. The first features a BMX bike chase, which is pretty rad! In the second, Apple (Laurence Leboeuf) destroys a villain with her noam stick. Lastly, don’t forget to take a look at our video interview we had with Laurence during the Fantasia Film Festival.

Kind and welcoming, Laboeuf couldn’t praise the filmmakers enough, which gives us the impression that Turbo Kid must have been a total blast to work on. She also sang high praises about the legendary Michael Ironside. But, one of the highlights of this interview might be Laboeuf’s confession to her Elfin aspirations.

Last week, we broke news that Michael Ironside was spotted in Montreal and all geared up for his role as “Zeus,” the self-proclaimed leader of the Wasteland in Turbo Kid. According to Executive Producer Jason Eisener (Hobo with a Shotgun) and team RKSS, Ironside wrapped up “Zeus” and said his goodbyes to the set of Turbo Kid over Easter weekend.
Yesterday was Michael Ironside’s last day with us on set. Working with him was truly a blast, and we feel very privileged. For the occasion, we share with you a second frame of the movie: Michael Ironside as Zeus, Eisener said via Facebook.

Day 6 – photo credit: Maxime Lamontagne
In a post-apocalyptic parallel future of 1997, an orphaned teenager called The Kid scavenges the Wasteland searching for relics from a better time (the ’80s). During one of his expeditions he meets Apple, a mysterious girl with a rather large secret.
As their relationship deepens, they accidentally run afoul of Zeus, the self-proclaimed leader of the Wasteland. Zeus, a sadistically droll maniac who murdered The Kid’s parents, now controls the Wasteland’s most precious commodity: fresh water. When Zeus’ gang kidnaps Apple, The Kid joins forces with Frederick, the laconic leader of the legendary Arm-Wrestling Clan. Armed with little more than blind faith and an ancient turbo-charged weapon, The Kid must fulfill his ultimate destiny: destroy Zeus, avenge his parents’ death and get the girl of his dreams.
