Filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn is sharing his unique collection of rare, vintage exploitation-era American movie posters in a gorgeous new hardcover book titled Nicolas Winding Refn: The Act of Seeing, from the NWR imprint of FAB Press. The book features vintage poster art from more than 300 classic titles, such as Spiked Heels and Black Nylons, Obscene House, Alice in Acidland, The Twisted Sex, Torture Me Kiss Me, and Zero In and Scream.
Nicolas Winding Refn: The Act of Seeing will be available at bookstores, online, and at various venues during Refn’s book tour, including at its debut at Fantastic Fest (September 24th – October 1st), in Austin, Texas. Fantastic Fest will also screen three of the films appearing in the book: Farewell Uncle Tom, X-Rated Super Market, and My Body Hungers. And each screening will be followed by a Q&A/book signing session with Refn and author Alan Jones. The Mondo Gallery, located at 4115 Guadalupe Street, will be hosting a special exhibit showcasing 15 of the original posters featured in Nicolas Winding Refn: The Act of Seeing, plus a brand new limited edition poster by artist Jay Shaw inspired by the book and created specifically for the gallery show. Refn will be on hand to sign copies of the book at the gallery during the opening reception, Friday September 25th. The exhibit will run September 25th – September 27th.
See blow, the extractions from the press release for more details and information:
Throughout the book, the controversial Danish filmmaker encourages readers to view this classic artwork in a whole new way and with a new-found appreciation of the shameless hyperbole inherent in masterfully overblown and alluring tag-lines devised solely to lure potential moviegoers into a darkened auditorium to watch other people’s lurid lives unravel.
With this new book, the celebrated filmmaker opens the doors to his private collection of obscure exploitation movie posters for the first time to create an extraordinary creation that mirrors the bold sensory experience offered in his own pioneering screen work. Refn has carefully overseen every aspect of the book’s production. The result is a book that encapsulates everything he knows about eyewitness confrontation on a heartfelt journey into the art and act of seeing.
This lavish quarter bound large format full color volume has unprecedented production values including a cloth bound gold embossed slipcase.
