Testament: Dark Roots of Thrash (2013) – Yell! Magazine’s Full Concert Series

Any metalhead, especially a thrasher, worth his/her salt knows of and has, at the very least, an appreciation for Berkeley, California’s Testament. Since forming in 1983, with Chuck Billy replacing Steve Souza on vocals in 1986 before their debut, The Legacy (1987), Testament has remained a consistent and powerful force in the metal scene. In fact, I’ll venture to say that anything Testament has done is badass enough to stand up to anything from the Big 4.

If the Big 4 is the top tier of heavy metal, Testament lands on the second tier. The thing about so many of the second and third tier heavy metal bands is that they’ve remained truer to their metal roots, comfortably settling into their position and seemingly not feeling the need to sell out to the masses. Testament has certainly made a name for themselves through the years, but there’s no denying that they have remained who they are. An additional point with these second and third tier bands (such as Overkill, Death Angel, Exodus, etc.), they really seem to become better musicians through the years.

I think you’ll notice Testament’s skill level as you watch their 2013 performance in Dark Roots of Thrash, recorded at The Paramount Theatre in Huntington, New York, on February 15th.
