Love them or hate them, zombies are obviously here for the long haul, and though we’ve had more than 100 zombie-based video games since the early 1990s, dozens of which have been released in the last 5 years alone, I feel that there’s always room for one more. Whether it be a single game or a series of games, give me the ghouls!

Prominent video-game publisher, Activision, seems to feel the same way that I do, as they’ve just released news that they’re working with Terminal Reality (the guys behind Kinect Star Wars and GhostBusters: The Video Game) to develop a new game based on The Walking Dead. Unlike the game by developers Telltale Games, this new game will be based on AMC’s popular television series, and not the comics written by Robert Kirkman.

In this new FPS, players will control Daryl Dixon (played by yummy Norman Reedus in the TV show), as he and his brother Merle fight through the hordes on their way to Atlanta. You’ll also have the option to avoid the monsters all together, but hey, what fun is that? On their journey, the brothers will meet other survivors, and any interaction with them will be left entirely up to the player. The appropriation of provisions such as food, ammunition, and other necessary supplies will also be left totally up to the player, and all such goodies will apparently be rare, so you’ll have to make do with what you have, and dole them out with care. Though not an entirely new concept, the idea that players have more command over what happens during gameplay than normal, takes me back to the days I used to read Choose Your Own Adventure books, and I’m shaking with excitement to get my hands on this game!

Slated to hit shelves for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC sometime in 2013, Activision’s The Walking Dead has the chance to take an old, done-to-death idea like zombies and turn it into a truly novel gaming experience.
