If you’re expecting The Ring 3 to pick up right after the events of The Ring 2, then you’re in for a big surprise because the third installment isn’t a threequel in the franchise, but a prequel. Samara strikes again, but we’ll finally get to know much more about her origins.
Officially titled Rings, the horror film revolves around the events that took place before The Ring. Rings is the story of the years before the video tape came to be and the beginning of how Samara’s terror began. At the moment, it’s unclear at what point in the film the cursed video tapes come into existence, but based on a new character’s description it appears Samara’s past is going to be explained by visions and flashbacks again.
Alex Roe (The 5th Wave, Sniper: Legacy) has been selected by Paramount Pictures to play the lead male role alongside Matilda Lutz. Based on the description, Roe will play the boyfriend to Lutz’ character, who “becomes distant from her after watching the tape.”
Rings is going to be directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez off a script written by Akiva Goldsman, David Loucka and Jacob Aaron Estes. The prequel is slated for release on November 13, 2015. A slot previously reserved for the new Friday the 13th movie.
