Former UFC light heavyweight contender Anthony Johnson may not be fully retired yet. A comeback may be currently in the works for the knockout artist in the UFC heavyweight division.
In an interview on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani on Monday, Johnson’s manager Ali Abdel-Aziz said that his American fighter is potentially planning a potential return in the Octagon in the very near future and they will meet with UFC President Dana White as early as this week.
This time Johnson is expected to pursue matches in the heavyweight division among other fighters such as Stipe Miocic, Cain Velasquez, Fabricio Werdum, and Derrick Lewis, just to name a small few.
Abdel-Aziz said,
It has to make sense for him, he’ll come back as a heavyweight, we want him to come back as a heavyweight. We’re meeting with UFC this week to see what he wants to do. Dana White really loves Anthony Johnson. How can you not love Anthony Johnson? He’s terrifying.
Johnson, 33, was last seen inside the Octagon at UFC 210 in April 2017. Daniel Cormier snapped his three-fight win streak in a light heavyweight title bout by submission (rear-naked choke). While active, “Rumble” held notable wins by knockout over Glover Teixeira, Ryan Bader, Jimi Manuwa, Alexander Gustafsson, and Antônio Rogério Nogueira.
