The pilot episode of Bates Motel premiered last week. Although it served primarily as an episode to set the stage and introduce us to the principal players, it did dig a little deeper than scratching the surface.
Most importantly, we learned that Norman Bates seems to be a pretty normal, well-adjusted boy. It is, however, his mother, Norma, who’s crazier than a shit-house rat. Also, despite Norman’s awkward demeanor, he is able to attract the attention of the popular girls in a positive way. It might be the “lost puppy” kind of attention, but at least it’s not ridicule.
In a surprising twist, because I thought it would have gone the other way, it’s Norma who seems to feel sexual toward her son. The way she posed on the car and on her bed, the way she prevents Norman from going out to “study” with some cute girls, to the way she’s highly disappointed in him for being late home from school all is a little possessive and creepy. Sure, Norman sneaked a peek at his mother changing through the window, but he’s a teenage boy with raging hormones.
Then we had the dramatic rape scene, and Mama Norman was hardly affected by it. Business and mission at hand, she is dead set on cleaning up the mess for their new beginning. It’s Norman who wants to do the right thing, not mommy dearest.
Despite some of the shocking scenes and ideas put in front of us in the pilot episode, I have a feeling this show is going to get all kinds of shit house crazy on us before it ends. I for one am excited to see Norman transform into a mad man.
Be sure to check out the next episode of Bates Motel, “Nice Town You Picked Norma,” airing March 25th at 10 p.m. EST.
