Two 12-year-old girls from Waukesha, Wisconsin, Morgan E. Geyser and Anissa E. Weier, have been charged as adults for the premeditated attempt to kill their “friend.” The suspects invited their friend (her name is being withheld) over for a sleepover on Friday, May 30th, and the next day they allegedly lured her out to the woods and stabbed her 19 times. Miraculously, the victim did not die and is recovering in hospital.
Geyser and Weier are being held on $500,000 bail, each.
Why did this happen? Creepypasta. The suspects are reportedly fans of the Slender Man, a horror-based fan fiction that got its start within the realm of Creepypasta. The girls were planning to hide out in an abandoned house where they believed Slender Man lived after killing their friend.
If you don’t know, Slender Man is a modern urban myth. His form is often edited into the background of old pictures with a caption that typically explains that all the children in the picture were never seen again. Also, those who see Slender Man go insane and lose their memories.
The girls have stated to detectives that they are unable to feel remorse for their actions. One of the suspect’s lawyer has requested that his client be moved from juvenile detention to a mental health facility.
Normally I’d be all upset about this blaming business, as they typically do with heavy metal, horror, video games, etc. Not this time, however, since the girls have essentially pointed the finger at Slender Man themselves. Given that the suspects planned this for months and that they’re “blaming” Slender Man, which seems to me to be a part of their plan, I really don’t think there’s a chance for them to plead insanity. Yeah, they’re mentally ill, but they knew what they were doing, from the planning to the deed to the scapegoat excuse.
If found guilty, I don’t see anything wrong with the facing the total sentence of 60 years in prison.
Our sympathies go out to all the families involved.
