Rumor is Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez is on the verge of signing a UFC contract, and his bout inside the Octagon is targeted for UFC 178 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Apparently, his first fight is lined up with top 10 staple Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone on Sept 27.
MMA Fighting reported the news yesterday:
Sources close to the bout who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the matchup had not yet been finalized confirmed the news to Sherdog.com. The bout is contingent on the UFC acquiring Alvarez’s services from Bellator. Negotiations are ongoing because Alvarez currently remains under Bellator contract at the time of this writing.
There’s no official word coming from the UFC yet, but if this remains true, then UFC 178 is staking up to be a great fight card. The event already headlines a light heavyweight championship bout between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier. UFC 178 will also feature rising MMA star Connor McGregor against Dustin Poirier, as well as the return of former bantamweight champion Dominic Cruz.
