Rafael dos Anjos missed the biggest payday of his life for not facing Conor McGregor at UFC 196 and now it doesn’t looks like the UFC lightweight champion will be defending the title at UFC 200 after all.
According to an official announcement from the UFC, the 155-pound Kingpin will be squaring off against former Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez on Thursday, July 7 at a UFC Fight Night event in Las Vegas. This will be the first time a men’s title fight will headline on UFC Fight Pass, an MMA streaming service which initially launched in 2014.

Alvarez recently defeated former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis by split decision in a five round war at UFC Fight Night: Dillashaw vs. Cruz in January. Alvarez also has notable wins over Gilbert Melendez, Michael Chandler, and Pat Curran. As for the current champ, dos Anjos successfully defended the title against Donald Cerrone at UFC on Fox 17 via TKO at just 66 seconds into the first round, resulting in the fastest finish in UFC lightweight title history.
Following this UFC Fight Pass event, women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk will take on Claudia Gadelha on Friday during The Ultimate Fighter 23 Finale.
