Down: SWU (2011) – Yell! Magazine’s Full Concert Series

Are you ready to smoke some weed? You better be, because it’s time for some Down. The magic of this band is its perfect blend of new-school doom with ’60s- and ’70s-era acid rock and extreme and sludge metal. Listening to Down is like going out for a night on the town, taking an eightball, and getting into a bar fight.

Down hasn’t been the most productive band in existence, considering they only have three full-length releases, two EPs, and one live album. Note: Down’s second EP, Down IV – Part II, will dropped on May 13, 2014. However, as a supergroup formed in 1991, no one expects these guys to give up their bread and butter. At it’s inception, Down brought together five powerhouses and friends in the heavy metal world: vocalist/songwriter Phil Anselmo of Pantera, guitarist Pepper Keenan of Corrosion of Conformity, second guitarist Kirk Windstein and bassist Todd Strange of Crowbar, and drummer Jimmy Bower of Eyehategod.

Although the band has had some changes in the lineup and only three-fifths of the original members remain (which is pretty good 20+ years later), and they’ve gone on major hiatuses, they remain a constant as a metal force. If you are or ever were a Pantera fan, then you need to check Down out. Not that Down is the same as Pantera, but with Anselmo in front, you’ll definitely have that feeling.

The performance in the player above is from Down’s 2011 appearance at the São Paulo SWU Music & Arts Festival, where they played mostly from their debut album, Nola.
