The Friday the 13th slasher franchise gets around like a promiscuous cheerleader, that is, as far as production and distribution rights go. Without getting into who owned what when, let’s just say things get complicated and it’s the fans who suffer for the glut in Jason flicks.
Good news! Just yesterday it was reported that Paramount Pictures officially owns the franchise rights, including Jason and his likeness. This means sequels and happy fans the world over. But how did Paramount acquire these rights?
Remember that Christopher Nolan film, Interstellar? Well, that was a Paramount film and Warner Bros. wanted in so much that they offered Paramount their rights to co-finance the next Friday the 13th (as well as their portion of a future South Park movie). However, there may be a caveat; sources are reporting that Paramount will only have these rights for five years, which means they better act quickly.
Let’s just hope they don’t send Jason to Mars.
