It was pretty much a given that The Governor was going to make a return to The Walking Dead in Season 4 and, if you saw the mid-season finale, you know that he finally got his just desserts, but do you want to see the loathed character make a return in the season’s second half? Actor David Morrissey dropped some vague “hints” to PA:
Something happened to him. I feel like a shady politician where I can’t confirm and I can’t deny anything. Certainly, bad things befell him at the end of the last episode but we just have to wait and see.
Producer Gale Ann Hurd hasn’t denied the possibility of The Governor returning, stating, “That was a head shot! Lilly shot him.” Sure, it sounds like an impossibility, but we did see Lori as a hallucination, so anything is possible.
Further to possibly, or not, seeing the Governor in future episodes of The Walking Dead, Hurd also commented on the show’s future:
Our characters are very much on the run, not as a group but split up, and they’re all in jeopardy because — as we’ve learned — being on the road alone is a difficult and dangerous place to be. It will also give us an opportunity to get to know who they are and whether they have the will to survive. How much have they changed after this devastation and can they retain their humanity?
Personally, I don’t see any characters affected enough by the Governors death to warrant a hallucination cameo. Was he a great character for the show? Definitely, but his time and usefulness has expired. I think we’ll have enough to keep us entertained as we watch our survivors grapple with the harshness of life outside the prison.
The Walking Dead returns on February 9, 2014.
