Huntress finally debuted the long-awaited video for “Zenith” last week. “Zenith” comes from the heavy metal outfit’s second album, Starbound Beast (June 28, 2013), and has been teased for months — much too long in today’s demanding culture. But if you felt the video took too long to be delivered, I think you’ll be satisfied with the final product, which was directed by the music video visionary Phil Mucci (Halestorm – “I Get Off”; Dommin – “My Heart, Your Hands”; Hail the Villain – “Runaway”; Korn – “Oildale (Leave me Alone)”; Opeth – “The Devil’s Orchard”; High on Fire – “Fertile Green”; Pig Destroyer – “The Diplomat”).
The “Zenith” video is filmed in a neon, high-contrast style that reminds me of some acid art from the ’60s and ’70s. The CG effects help generate the comic book feel, and while this video is a visual orgasm, the star of the show is the contrasting elements of sexy nun/witches, aliens, and a giant Jill Janus. When Jill told live fans to pack their bongs for this video, she didn’t lie; I imagine watching this video while stoned would be an otherworldly experience.
“Zenith” is Huntress’ second video and it certainly tops their first, “Eight of Swords,” which was no slouch either. Huntress has a belief, and a well-appreciated one at that, of only bringing the best possible product forward. Who needs another band performing in a warehouse video?
