Bringing sex, violence, and fetish to the music video party is, once again, In This Moment. This band makes some of the best videos without going into complete short film territory, meaning that there are theatrical elements, but the band still presents themselves to the viewers. The latest video, and single that’s climbing rock charts, is for “Whore,” which comes off of In This Moment’s 2012 release, Blood.
The video is every bit as seductive and sexy as the mid-tempo song. In This Moment once again tapped director Robert Kley (he also directed “Adrenalize” and “Blood” for the band) to bring frontwoman Maria Brink‘s vision to life. I personally love the dunce cap with the song’s title scrawled on it. My take on the symbolism here, which is probably the common one, is that women who express their sexuality are isolated and made a negative example of in our society — a music video parallel to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter.
“Whore” also stars Chris Motionless of Motionless in White, the lucky bastard. Brink comments on her costar:
His look is so perfect for the dirty vintage feel of the video, and he was a perfect gentleman while being violated by me… I knew how amazing placing the visual arts to ‘Whore’ would be when we wrote it, and I have been waiting to release this video since we recorded the song.
Guitarist Chris Howorth also commented on the video:
The video is the best we have created to date – it’s just as creepy and sexy as our live show, with a bunch of extra surprises. Maria really outdid herself on this one… this is her twisted vision brought to life. Enjoy!
There’s a good reason for “Whore” to be climbing the rock charts, it’s accessible with well-placed metal elements. Actually, it’s probably more Lady GaGa than Lady GaGa is without trying. I mean that as a compliment to In This Moment; GaGa has to try to be edgy and shocking, whereas it comes naturally here.
Blood, while being a bit more mainstream than previous albums, is an excellent album and worth your hard-earned dollar. If you want something heavier, check out In This Moments back catalog.
