MAMA (2013) PosterI’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: There are few things in horror that actually scare me. One of them is the film having some relation to religion (which makes no sense because I’m far from religious), the second of them is fucking clowns (I hate clowns), and the third is the involvement of children. Mama has children, and judging from the trailer, their fear of angering Mama should make you scared — very, very scared. Actually, their fear seems to parallel the enabling wife of an abusive husband whose children need to be hushed by their mother in order not to provoke any paternal rage.

Mama is backed by Guillermo del Toro and based on the short 2008 Spanish film of the same name. Andres Muschietti wrote and directed both the short and the feature-length films, the latter of which stars Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, and Isabelle Nélisse.

The starting point of Mama is familiar, if you’ve seen the 1994 film Nell, starring Jodie Foster, in which the starring girls of Mama have lived and survived in the wilderness, completely removed from society. Upon their rescue, there’s obviously an adaptation phase, but then… what came back from the wilderness with Victoria (Megan Charpentier) and Lilly (Isabelle Nélisse)? As the trailer shows, it’s clearly terrifying and supernatural.

Mama will hit theaters on 18 January 2013. Check out the short below.
