Screw Robocop, Manborg is coming to DVD on April 16th. That’s right, shot as a throwback to ’80s sci-fi horror action films, Manborg tells the story of a dead soldier who finds himself reanimated as a cyborg killing machine, which Variety calls “enjoyably ridiculous.”
The armies of Hell have taken over the Earth, and all that stands in the way of the villainous Count Draculon and humanity’s total extinction is a motley crew of misfits led by the mighty Manborg: a warrior that’s half-man, half machine, but all hero.
Once a nervous young soldier who died alongside his brother in the first war against Hell, Manborg reawakens in the future, rebuilt as a walking weapon and mankind’s last hope. Struggling to learn the secret of his origins, he unwittingly befriends a post-apocalyptic Australian punker, a knife-wielding vixen, and a kung-fu master voiced with deliriously pitch-perfect stoicism by Canadian Kyle Herbert, the narrator from the hugely popular Dragonball Z television series. Manborg soon finds himself squaring off against Count Draculon in a desperate and bloody bid to take back the Earth!
Manborg was created by the Winnipeg-based film collective Astron-6 (Father’s Day) and executive produced by Colin Geddes and Peter Kuplowsky. The film celebrated its world premiere at Austin’s 2011 Fantastic Fest, and also impressed fans at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, Fantasia, and Lund Fantastik Fest.
The film is “a glorious mixture of claymation, computer graphics, practical effects, make-up and a DIY ethic that’s above and beyond most science fiction movies being produced. Manborg is a total hoot,” proclaims Filmthreat.com. “If it sounds silly, that’s because it is. It’s also wickedly funny, with bizarre comedic moments popping out at you from all sides,” says Fangoria.com, “Manborg plays it straight within the crazy direct-to-video universe it inhabits and we get to reap the rewards.”
