Who wishes they were in Helsinki, Finland, last night (May 28) to see that, if not to see the wicked bill that had Slayer, Mastodon, Ghost, and Gojira opening for Metallica?
It sounds like they’re playing in a tin can, but you can watch Metallica play “Frayed Ends of Sanity” live in the player above.
It’s hard to believe that in the 26 years since the release of …And Justice for All that Metallica has never performed “Frayed Ends of Sanity” live. One would assume that they’d at least performed every song, considering every song on that album is damn near a masterpiece. But alas, they have not, and I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise since on Live Shit: Binge & Purge they put together the “Justice Medley” to perform.
Thank god Metallica is doing the By Request tour, meaning that fans get to choose the songs. And that means Metallica will likely end up playing a lot of back catalog stuff that they’ve never played, such as “Frayed Ends,” or have nearly forgotten. But the Thrash Metal legends come prepared, as Lars explained to Delaware County Daily Times:
We’re going to have sit down and spin that one ["Frayed Ends of Sanity"] around for an hour or two. We carry a rehearsal room with us wherever we go. Give us an hour and we can learn any song in our catalog. We like to make the setlist real wacky and change it up as much as possible, but in 2014 the fans are picking the songs.
Whether you love ‘em, hate ‘em, or chastize ‘em for their mid-’90s garbage, you have to give credit to Metallica for always finding a way to give fans something interesting to bite into (i.e., Orion, the Antarctica show, a movie, By Request, etc.).
What song would you like to see Metallica play live?
