It’s true that the latest Nine Inch Nails album isn’t hitting the streets until September 3rd, but it is available to stream over at iTunes. This is only the 14-track version of Hesitation Marks, so if you’re hungry for the full 18-track album, you’ll just have to wait a little bit longer.
After waiting five years for this album, and given the mediocre, middle-of-the-road feel of the tracks that have already been released, I’m not sure fans are champing at the bit to get the deluxe, 18-track version that includes 42 minutes of Trent Reznor talking — especially when it sounds like he’s trying to justify his relevance:
I’ve learned to recognize, a lot of it forced through the process of recovery, that I’m wired wrong in certain ways, the chemical balance of my brain is off in terms of depression a little bit,” Reznor recently told The Guardian. “This record was written as the other side of that journey. The despair and loneliness and rage and isolation and the not-fitting-in aspect that still is in me, but I can express that in a way that feels more appropriate to who I am now. And often that rage is quieter.
That last part, “And often that rage is quieter,” is code for, “I’m old and don’t have the energy required to get pissed off anymore.”
Honestly, I’m not trying to rip on NIN. I think the tracks that were made available prior to the full album stream are good… they’re just not as edgy as previous NIN material.
