The first TV spot for Spike Lee’s Oldboy debuted today, and it makes the thriller look like a straight-up action movie, which means it’s still not persuasive. I don’t know what it is about this remake, but it’s not pulling me in. I’m certainly no purist, I’ll watch just about any remake that comes along, but this one just isn’t compelling. Perhaps it’s because the 2003 film by Chan-wook Park was such a mind-fuck that I can’t fathom a reason for making a new one for American audiences. Seriously, I condone importing foreign films and remaking them, but Park’s film has North American appeal.
I’m not trying to discredit Josh Brolin or Samuel L. Jackson or even Spike Lee, whom I can’t stand, but at this point, from my perspective, Oldboy (2013) should not have been made. I hope that when I do begrudgingly do see this my opinion changes.
Anyway, enjoy the 30-second TV spot. Oh, yes, and the film opens in theaters on November 27th.
