The Overlook Hotel

While Stephen King has no real affinity for the Stanley Kubrick adaptation of his book, The Shining, it is a favorite among genre fans. Now, 33 years later, a prequel is coming to life, and, according to Deadline the former Walking Dead writer, Glen Mazzara, is said to be penning the script.

Last July, the LA Times reported the following:

“Warner Bros. is quietly exploring the possibility of a prequel to The Shining. The studio has solicited the involvement of Hollywood writer-producer Laeta Kalogridis and her partners Bradley Fischer and James Vanderbilt to craft a new take as producers, according to a person familiar with the project who was not authorized to talk about it publicly… The film would focus on what happened before Jack Torrance (played memorably by Jack Nicholson), his wife, and their psychic son arrived at the haunted retreat where Torrance soon descends into violent madness.”

It seems that this latest news confirms what the Times reported.

If all goes well in terms of continuity, or not since this is taking on a life of its own, we can expect another sequel taking place after the events in The Shining, as King has penned his own sequel. Doctor Sleep, the sequel novel, focuses on Danny Torrance as an adult. How fucked up would you be?

At any rate, there’s no dates attached to The Overlook Hotel yet. I wonder just how much haunting this hotel did prior to the arrival of the Torrance family.
