Red Barrels, a new independent video game studio, has been announced and joins the Montreal game development scene among top studios in the city such as EA, Eidos, Ubisoft, and Warner Brothers Games.

Are you wondering if they have the creative skill set like the others? If you are, don’t be fooled by the new name; the game studio is founded by industry veterans ranging from Art Director to Lead level designer, who have also been involved on the biggest game franchises in history, including Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Army of Two, and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Red Barrels‘ primary focus is to create unforgettable single-player downloadable games.

The first item in Red Barrels’ list of to-dos is to complete the true survival-horror game experience titled Outlast, which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind. Outlast is expected to be ready for digital download on the PC sometime in 2013.

“There are already a lot of great games out there about terrifying monsters that eat brains; we want Outlast’s to be scary because you’ll know the enemies you face still have them,” said Philippe Morin, co-founder of Red Barrels.

“Our team has a lot of previous experience creating big, blockbuster games,” said co-founder David Chateauneuf. “We’re all really excited to see what kind of fear-based emotional roller coaster we can build on our own!”
