What a killer episode! The Walking Dead, Season 3 is shaping up to be the best season yet.

This episode, “Killer Within,” was rife with so much zombie mayhem that it could only be eclipsed by a good hard tug on the heartstrings. And that dramatic silence just before the chaos ensued was masterful. They should have played the intro to AC/DC’s “Hells Bells” over that one.

MAJOR SPOILERS

It seems that most of our characters are getting comfortable in their new surroundings. Our tribe is enjoying prison life, looking to the future, and Andrea is still under the Governor’s enchanting southern spell. However, those who are becoming comfortable are also becoming complacent and careless. I don’t know where it would rank in a top 10 list of things to be during a zombie apocalypse, but maintaining constant vigilance surely has to be in there. For Christ’s sakes, there are people eating monsters about and bad, bad people abound.

I have to ask, how does Rick allow Maggie and Glenn to pull guard duty together? That’s like putting a porn star and Charlie Sheen in the same room together and expecting them to sing the gospel. Of course these two love birds would neglect their duty and fornicate, especially with daddy Hershel (Walker – sorry, had to make the joke) unable to sneak up on them.

As a direct result of Maggie and Glenn’s indiscretion, someone was able to lay a trap for our tribe, a rather elaborate trap at that. And it was half successful, as it eliminated two of beloved tribe members. While one is heartbreaking, proving his strength and altruism to the end, our second death was both a relief and a bad omen. The aftermath of her death will surely put our tribe in dire straits down the road, since Rick is bound to go on a raving rampage, leaving our tribe either without or with a shell of a leader. I’m excited to see if Rick will become a savage leader.

Props go to Michonne for an unwavering sense of self-preservation and for being able to see people’s true colors, and for being a clever detective in finding fresh blood on the National Guard truck. But Andrea, stupid, stupid, stupid Andrea. What the hell are you thinking giving those details to Merle? I know you’re falling for the cult of Woodbury, but a part of me feels the writers are making you the new woman to hate. Yeah, we were all rooting for you when Dale was being an annoying bastard, but maybe he should have let you 86 yourself.

Speaking of offing oneself; isn’t that what Lori has done. She’s been eager to escape this life since Season 2. Why? Well, being dead she doesn’t have to see her son grow up to become a killer, she doesn’t have to fix or work on her marriage, she doesn’t have to live with the guilt about Shane, and she doesn’t have to survive. How freaking selfish of her to leave her son and a newborn in this piece of shit world. “My baby has to live — for all of us.” Riiight. It wasn’t that long ago that she was contemplating letting Carl die on Hershel’s deathbed, and now she’s willing to die to bring a new life into this world. No, she’s not sacrificing herself, and she’s not doing the right thing; she’s taking the easy way out. I sincerely hope that we get to see her zombified.

So, let’s conclude that the “Killer Within” is our inner tendency to become complacent.

This episode has really given The Walking Dead, Season 3 a big push forward and we’re waiting anxiously to see what will happen next.
