CM Punk’s UFC debut is finally happening tonight at UFC 203. It’s been almost three years since he signed a multi-fight contract with the UFC, his time to step inside the Octagon is officially here.
Punk successfully hit the scale last night at the weigh-ins for UFC 203, he made weight like a pro MMA fighter coming in on point at 170-pound for his welterweight bout against Mickey Gall. His opponent came in a little over the weight limit, but that won’t stop the highly-anticipated fight from happening. MMA fans want to see CM Punk’s evolution inside the cage and see if he has what it takes to be in a real MMA fight.
Ahead of the bout, tension between both fighters ignited at the UFC 203 weight-ins, after Punk refused to shake hands with Gall. In an interview with Megan Olivi on the FS1 weigh-in show, Punk explained why he didn’t accept the handshake.
CM Punk said,
I don’t know, he was stuttering. He kept repeating, ‘Oh you don’t want to shake my hand, you don’t want to shake my hand’ or something like that. I’m not here to shake anybody’s hand. I’m here to punch people in the face.
CM Punk, 37, whose real name is Phil Brooks has been training under Duke Roufus at Roufusport MMA Academy. He has trained alongside Anthony Pettis and Erik Koch. CM Punk believes he has gone a long way since his first day of training.
I think once I had an opponent, once I had a date and once I was free of that damn herniated disc I was walking around with for who knows how long, I was a different person. It’s one thing to train, it’s another thing to train with a singular purpose and that’s what I got in Mickey Gall. I know this is a difficult sport to master. I look forward to mastering it sometime and I realize that will probably never happen, but I will get as good as I possibly can.
CM Punk meets Gall tonight at UFC 203 in Cleveland, Ohio.
