UFC On FOX 15: Luke Rockhold Earns New Nickname – “The Dragon Slayer”

Former STRIKEFORCE middleweight champion Luke Rockhold was oozing with confidence all week leading up to his anticipated fight against Lyoto Machida, which many believed was in favor for the Brazilian. Rockhold shocked the world last night by not only beating “The Dragon,” but also dominating him in all forms of combat. It’s safe to say this was a career defining “virtuoso” performance by Rockhold, who may have just earned himself a title shot with the UFC middleweight champion.

In the main event of UFC on FOX 15 in Newark, New Jersey, Rockhold defeated Machida in a one-sided fight via submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:31 of the second round. The win also granted Rockhold an additional $50,000 for his second consecutive Performance of the Night bonus award. Although, UFC President Dana White didn’t definitively say Rockhold is next in line for the middleweight belt, but champion Chris Weidman let his thoughts loose on the future No.1 contender.

He [Luke Rockhold] is a very well-rounded fighter, but he doesn’t have an expertise in anything, I think that’s going to be the problem he has to face with me. I’m a master at wrestling, I’m a master in jiu-jitsu. Striking, I’m an expert in as well. I’m the best at everything. He’s in trouble.

Weidman faces Vitor Belfort next month at UFC 187, Rockhold is expected to be at ring side for a possible post-fight announcement.
