R.I.P. Harold Ramis AKA Dr. Egon Spengler From Ghostbusters

Dr. Egon Spengler

Our beloved Ghostbusters nerd Harold Ramis (aka, Dr. Egon Spengler) died this morning at age 69 from a rare disease called vasculitis, according to his wife:

Vasculitis can affect any of the body’s blood vessels. These include arteries, veins, and capillaries. Arteries carry blood from your heart to your body’s organs. Veins carry blood from your organs and limbs back to your heart. Capillaries connect the small arteries and veins.

If a blood vessel is inflamed, it can narrow or close off. This limits or prevents blood flow through the vessel. Rarely, the blood vessel will stretch and weaken, causing it to bulge. This bulge is known as an aneurysm.

Ramis is arguably the greatest filmmaker that Chicago has ever produced. While some of us might know him best for his role in the Ghostbusters franchise, he is also highly recognized for other film projects such as Groundhog Day, Heavy Metal, Stripes, Caddyshack, Animal House, Meatballs, and National Lampoon’s Vacation.

Please take this moment to remember him and his work over the years.

R.I.P., Egon!
