Faith No More is probably one of the greatest bands of all time, and their influence likely extends further than any of us realize. It’s no secret that without Faith No More there would be no KoRn, but Rage Against the Machine, Deftones, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, System of a Down, and Papa Roach all owe a debt to the kings of funk-infused experimental alt metal.

Most of us are aware of Mike Patton, but there was so much more to Faith No More than his peculiar genius – and this full concert proves it. Just check out the frantic performance of “Woodpecker from Mars” – probably one of the best metal instrumentals ever.

You Fat Bastards: Live at the Brixton Academy was recorded Saturday, April 28, 1990, and released August 20, 1990. In my opinion, this was the band’s best line up, and this concert shows just how tight they were as a band – and I’ve always loved Jim Martin.

This concert also shows how eclectic the band was, or rather Mike Patton, who seems to be the only one on stage who’s not shy. But mostly we’re treated to Patton’s strange vocal delivery, which comes off as condescending at times. Still, he’s able to do his quirky without fucking up the songs. I don’t know, it just works. We also get a chance to see him sing a current pop song (at the time) in the middle of one of their own, a thing he still does today. I’m of two minds when it comes to Patton’s performance: on one side, I think he’s genius, and on the other, I want to punch him. In the end, I love it.

If you’ve got nothing else to do for the next hour, or if you need some kick-ass tunes, then just hit play – you’ll thank me for it.
