2011 Summer Movie Preview, Part Two: July

Our second installment of three summer movie previews (see the first here) brings us another Marvel Film’s adaptation of an iconic comic book, the third in the Transformers franchise and a fight between six-shooting cowboys and nasty aliens from outer space.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon
(July 1)

The first two movies of the Transformers franchise had the benefit of Megan Fox to carry the franchise, but Transformers: Dark of the Moon will not. Whether it was director Michael Bay’s or Fox’ decision is irrelevant. What is important is whether her replacement, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, is up for the challenge of creating wood in the theaters around the world. Being a Victoria’s Secret model means she has the look to accomplish the feat. Putting aside whether she can act, her sex appeal is unquestionable.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Trailer:

If Bay’s expertise is scalable (meaning he improves with each outing), and it seems it is as his second Transformers flick was better than the first, then we are in for a great ride. The press surrounding the film tells that it will have more character development and a darker plot, which concentrates on the relationship between Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) and their fight against Shockwave (voiced by Hugo Weaving).

Captain America: The First Avenger (July 22)

Why Captain America took a backseat to other Marvel Film adaptations like Daredevil, Elektra, and Ghost Rider is beyond us. Perhaps it was the WWII timeline (making it seem dated) or the direct-to-video release of Captain America back in 1990 (which sucked monkey ass) that made the studios shy for a big-screen release.

In comic terms, Captain America was one of the greats in the Marvel universe, let’s hope the millions they spent this time around translates into an epic battle of good and evil between the man in blue and his arch nemesis Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).

Cowboys & Aliens (July 29)

We told you about this film last February and how, along with Battle Los Angeles (release date March 11), it was one of two films we were most excited about. Directed by John Favreau (Iron Man) and starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, Cowboys & Aliens brings spaceships to the Wild West. The mix of the Western and Sci-Fi genres should be a blast to watch, especially since it includes the gorgeous Olivia Wilde of House M.D. fame.
