Before the Internet, before we were privy to his sensational dance moves, before we were aware of his inflated ego, there was a time when Jean-Claude Van Damme was actually kind of cool. The film that did it for him was Bloodsport. It was the “true-life” account of Frank Dux’ bloody journey in Hong Kong’s Kumite and it was bloody violent for the 1988 film industry.

Flash forward to 2011, and we have a Bloodsport remake in talks – sans Van Damme.

Famed producer Ed Pressman (American Psycho, Das Boot, The Crow, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans) is currently shopping around the reboot, relaunch, remake, or whatever you want to call it. While the rumor mill hasn’t attached a name for lead actor, director Phillip Noyce (Salt, The Saint, Blind Fury, Dead Calm) is apparently interested in taking charge.

The premise of the new Bloodsport will deviate from the original, bringing it into the 21st century. We’ll have an American soldier (likely suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder) going to Brazil to escape the violent memories of his wartime experiences in Afghanistan. There he’ll find his way into the fighting circuit and, well, let’s assume that he wins the title match. He might be named Frank Dux, but the back story certainly won’t be his.

We like the UFC, the MMA, and fighting in general, so we’re obviously fans of the original Bloodsport and we’re not sure what improvements can be made. We’re also interested in seeing the new one, but we’re also not sure if it’s necessary. If it’s going to entirely change the story, why call it Bloodsport? And who’s going to play the awesome Bolo with the alternate tit flexing?
