Since 2006, Clisson, France, has been the place to be in June if you’re a metalhead. Clisson is home to Hellfest, one of the biggest and best annual metal festivals and, with perhaps the exception of Wacken in Germany, it might be the most despised by right-wing conservative types: In 2009, religious groups asked sponsors to pull out (not abstain, however) from Hellfest; Coca-Cola subsequently withdrew. The following year, some French politician (it doesn’t matter which one) stated that: “Our values are not like those of the Regional Council (PS); to be funding a satanic festival!” Wasn’t this satanic metal scare done like 30 years ago?
Hellfest 2011
If your metal wet dream is coming true this weekend (June 17th, 18th, 19th) and you’re attending Hellfest 2011, let us know how it was and send us any pics you took. If you’re in the Clisson area and don’t have tickets, good luck getting some; Hellfest 2011 sold out a month ago. Yell! Magazine hopes you can get a fair price from a scalper.
Headliners at Hellfest 2011 are Iggy & the Stooges (Friday 17th), Scorpions (Saturday 18th), and Ozzy Osbourne (Sunday 19th), which seems pretty tame considering the caliber of metal acts on the bill – then again, Alter Bridge? Mr. Big?
