Yell! Magazine is running on all cylinders to bring you the best of Heavy MTL 2012. Day 2 is just starting, we’re hopped up on cigarettes and Red Bull and ready for another full day of interviews. We’ll have yesterday’s video interviews posted soon, and I’d tell you who we got, but that would be like sneaking a peek at your Christmas presents before Christmas Day. Fine, I’ll tell you what to look forward to: we interviewed Job for a Cowboy, Rose Funeral, Between the Buried and Me, Cannibal Corpse, Killswitch Engage, and Goatwhore.
I will also tell you about some of the performers we saw.
Who kicked Ass?
Cannibal Corpse delivered evil, like they always do. The sound was tight and ferocious. George (aka, Corpsegrinder) was in perfect form vocally, delivering hell through his throat. As with outdoor fests, the bass was turned up, and there are few things on this planet that sound more awesome than Paul Mazurkiewicz (drums) and Alex Webster (bass) coming at you with an agenda of rage. Note that the bass did little to drown out Patrick O’Brien and Rob Barrett. If you’ve never seen Cannibal Corpse, you owe it to yourself to do so.
Killswitch Engage is reformed with Jesse Leach and the band delivered with a renewed vigor. I personally enjoyed Adam D’s joking and humor between songs, stating such things as, “I’m gonna put my dick in all your asses.” I thought it brought a nice break to the seriousness of the music. My colleague, on the other hand, wasn’t impressed. At any rate, the band seems stronger than ever.
Who Pissed Us Off?
Five Finger Death Punch was just too much. Too much confusing. Too much jersey-wearing. Too much long. Too much country. Too much hip-hop. Too much Kid Rock. Too much unwelcome. Fans around me were booing and the band had to have heard it. Why Five Finger was the band prior to the headliner, is beyond me.
Best Performance Of The Night
What fans really came for was System of a Down. They performed a set tighter than a newly arrived prison inmate’s ass. Fans weren’t disappointed one bit as S.O.A.D. played two-hours worth of their best material. By far, they are one of the most unique bands to see, and they don’t seem angry at all as they perform, despite the gravity of their lyrics.
Stay tuned and I’ll bring you an update for Heavy MTL 2012, Day 2.
My colleague also informs me that he’s going to try to get some pics up.
