No.5 The Raid: Redemption
We could go on and on about how incredibly badass The Raid is. When it comes to straight-ahead action, you would be hard-pressed to find fight scenes done at this caliber. It is the only foreign film on the entire list and we strongly advise everyone go out and rent this one, especially with a sequel already in the works.
No.4 The Avengers
The third and best of the comic book adaptions on this list, is the awesome summer blockbuster The Avengers. If there was ever a movie to catch in theaters this summer, this was it. Since you would have to be living under a rock not to know what this movie is, we will skip the plot summary. Instead, we will say that of the three adaptions on this list, The Avengers is by far the most well made. Everything from the script to the action to the acting was just so awesome it is hard to think of ways to describe it. What the movie does best, however, is capture why superheroes interest us so much in the first place: they are fun. If you are in the small group of people yet to see it, run to the store or a RedBox and pick this up.
No.3 Zero Dark Thirty
Moving into the top 3 of the year we have Zero Dark Thirty or, as most people know it, the “Osama Bin Laden capture movie.” Despite the controversy that has been surrounding the film this year, it is excellent. Of all the films on this list, no film comes close to being executed with the same precision as Zero Dark Thirty. Having not been a fan of The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow’s Academy Award winning war film, we were expecting something along similar lines. Instead, we were treated to a tight, intense, and gripping portrayal of the events leading up to the death of Osama Bin Laden. We highly advise people to go out and see this while it is still in theaters, it just got a wider release recently and should be playing in most theaters right now.
No.2 The Loved Ones
There was a noticeable lack of truly great horror in 2012. If there is one horror film this year, however, that absolutely knocked it out of the park, it is The Loved Ones. If you like horror, then check out this Australian independent as soon as possible.
No.1 Django Unchained
This one is probably a pretty predictable choice for some people. Tarantino’s latest effort, Django Unchained is one of the best films of the year. Marked with memorable performances from Jaime Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, and a script written by Tarantino himself, Django really stands as one of Tarantino’s finest films. Despite what you may think about all the controversy sparking up about this film, anyone who is a fan of westerns, actions, adventures, comedies, or just great cinema in general would like this film. This is one of the funniest movies of the year as well as one of the best homages to westerns we have ever seen. Do not hesitate to see this while it is still playing in theaters. In fact it should be the next film you see in theaters, that is just how much we stand by it.
