Anthony Pettis’ wish came true, as he will be the next contender for José Aldo’s coveted UFC Featherweight Championship. Pettis will be dropping down to featherweight from his habitual lightweight class. Dana White publicly admitted Pettis’ desire to challenge Aldo at the UFC 156 post-fight press conference.
Fresh off a unanimous decision victory over former Lightweight Champ Frankie Edgar, Aldo has only tasted defeat once in his career and is on a whopping 15-fight winning streak that includes victories over Mark Hominick, Kenny Florian, Cub Swanson, and Chad Mendes.
Pettis knocked out Donald Cerrone with a body shot a couple of weeks ago and was the last WEC Lightweight Champion, having beat Benson Henderson in a fight forever to be remembered for the “Showtime Kick.”
This featherweight title bout will likely be the main event for the August 3rd event, however, a location for the show has not been made official yet.
