At 98, Stuart Freeborn died of complications from old age on February 5.
If you’re unfamiliar with the legendary makeup artist, he’s the man who created Star Wars’ Yoda and Chewbacca, and he’s also responsible for much of what you saw in The Omen, Richard Donner’s Superman (actually, that whole franchise), and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
In Freeborn’s passing, George Lucas has stated that Freeborn was,
“Already a makeup legend” when he started working on “Star Wars. He brought with him not only decades of experience, but boundless creative energy. His artistry and craftsmanship will live on forever in the characters he created. His Star Wars creatures may be reinterpreted in new forms by new generations, but at their heart, they continue to be what Stuart created for the original films.”
Indeed, Stuart Freeborn is a man responsible for many of our childhood dreams and giving life to much of our creativity. We wish him peace.
