Gigantour 2013
Remember how good Gigantour used to be? The first installment featured Dream Theater, Anthrax, Fear Factory, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Nevermore, Life of Agony, Symphony X, Dry Kill Logic, and Bobaflex. Gigantour 2, which was arguably the best, featured Lamb of God, Opeth, Arch Enemy, Overkill, Into Eternity, Sanctity, and The SmashUp.
Progressively, the number of bands on Gigantour diminished and the heaviness faded.
Gigantour 2013 is also progressively looking sad. As we reported earlier, David Draiman’s new band, Device, will perform (all of what, 10 songs from their only album?). Now, Death Division has just been confirmed. Death Division does feature the legendary drummer Tim Yeung, but the band itself, which also features Jerry Montano (Hellyeah and Nothingface), leaves something to be desired. It’s suited for Active Rock Radio at best.
There’s also some speculation that Black Label Society, Hellyeah, and Newsted will be on the bill. Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing Newsted; I always loved his voice and his new band sounds sick. For the most part, these are bands that most people aren’t really interested in seeing when going to Gigantour.
The beautiful thing about Gigantour was that it was a place for old-school metal and the new version of it. A place where fans of a certain type of metal could enjoy it without the interference of metalcore, hardcore, or middle-of-the-road metal. It’s really sad to see how Gigantour lost its way.
