It is with a heavy heart to report that Jeff Hanneman, founding member of Slayer, died today of liver failure at the Hemet Valley Medical Center. It’s not known to what extent the rare skin disease (necrotizing fasciitis) he contracted in 2011 affected his liver. Hanneman most likely contracted the skin disease from a spider bite. The disease itself is a literal skin-eating disease.
As any heavy metal fan knows, Hanneman contributed as a songwriter to many of Slayer’s most important songs and albums. “Raining Blood” remains Slayer’s biggest selling song, at 205,000. Although whether or not Hanneman would ever return to perform with Slayer, the band was optimistic and hoped that he would.
Our sympathies go to his survivors: Kathy, his wife of 16 years, sister Kathy, and brothers Michael and Larry. Funeral arrangements are pending.
