Usually I like to offer Yell! Magazine’s Full Concert Series earlier in the evening, but shit happens and life takes over. At any rate, I’m sure many metal fans are paying their respects to Slayer’s Jeff Hanneman tonight. No doubt beers are being drunk, shots are going down, and Slayer is on the turntable (or whatever format your using). I’d like to suggest that you have a listen to a 2007 Slayer performance at Rock Am Ring: Sound is great, video is great, and the set list is great.
Born on January 31, 1964, and growing up in Long Beach, California, Jeff Hanneman came from a military family. This fact led to a strong interest in military history, which in turn influenced the content of his lyrics. He was also influenced by punk rock.
In 1981, he met Kerry King and together they decided to form their own band. After Show No Mercy, Hanneman and Lombardo worked on a side project, which never came to fruition on the advice of Rick Rubin. What he said to Hanneman was, “”Ahhh, don’t do it, man — this is the kind of thing that breaks bands up!”
Hanneman contributed music and lyrics to every Slayer album. In fact, he wrote the music to most of Slayer’s live standards: “South of Heaven,” “War Ensemble,” “Raining Blood,” “Angel of Death,” “Mandatory Suicide,” and “Seasons in the Abyss.” There’s no doubt that Jeff Hanneman was, and always will be, a giant within the heavy metal community.
